My friends found a dog in the mtns where they live, they've had her for a month. Now I have her.?
Im taking her to the vet's this weekend...what if she's microchipped? Do I have to haver her scanned? If she's got a chip, do I have to 'turn her in?

Odds are the dog is not chipped anyway. So if it's not you will have your answer. Do the right thing as you will always wonder.
I saw this thing on TV a few weeks ago where a dog was found in Montana or something. They checked for the chip and the owners lived 2000 miles away. They showed the people being reunited w. the dog and the joy in the families eyes was heartwarming. They had always been sad that they didn't know what had happened to their dog........ a family member.
You know what you have to do if you think about it.

What have they done to find the owner of the dog? What have you done to find the owner of the dog? Have you contacted any of the organisations in your area that the dog may be registered with as lost? Most charities and agencies would check if the dog was microchipped when you reported/checked if someone was searching for the dog.
If the dog is chipped then you should contact the owners because that is what they are the rightful owners. If the dog is not chipped then you should at least give a description of the dog so that it could be re-united with the rightful owners. If the dog has been abandoned then you would be able to continue caring for it with a clear concience.

The vet should automatically scan the dog if he is aware the dog was found. If the dog IS microchipped, then you must return her to the rightful owner, the vet would insist on this. You must be honest about this,at least give the rightful owners a chance to explain how/why the dog was lost.

Attempt to return the dog to the owner who may be distraught.
You will get over the dog quicker than the rightful owner will.

Vets scan dogs routinely and yes you would have to hand her back. The owner might be sick with worry.

Maybe she would like to go home to her original owner, even if she has enjoyed your company temporarily.
