Mechanics, please help, want to buy second hand car?

I want to buy a not too expensive second hand car and have found a 1995 VW Golf. But it has a little bit of corrosion on the axle casing, other wise it seems a good car, is this, or could this be a problem?

Thank you for any answers in advance.

Update:

All of you thanks.

Doc, the milage is 140,000 km (about 100,00 miles.

If you are wondering about the condition of the car , you can take it to an independent mechanic and have it inspected. Yes it might cost a few $$$ but in the long run you will save money. Good luck.

A little rust on the axle casing is really very normal, especially for a 95'. So I think you may have found a good one. The VW golf is a good car and depending on the mileage, could last you another 10 years, especially if the maintenance was done regularly.

I would also have to suggest against getting a VW. They're reliability and quality control is amazing horrible. Even the President of VW has admitted that they make bad cars!

Check out the ConsumerReports ratings and determine which cars fit your budget and needs. They have all sorts of literature for used cars. Determine what car gets good reliability marks and scores. More importantly try to see what cars get good ratings that you'd feel comfortable owning.

Then go find a car that's been well taken care of. Take it to a Mechanic and ask them to check it out and make sure everything is ok with the car.

Not sure what you mean by the axle casing as these cars are front wheel drive. If you meant the rear axle then as long as the corrosion is not at the points where it is mounted to the body it should be fine

As long as their isn't too much rust it should be fine but see what kind of driver the original owner was. but the corrosion most likely will not go all the way through so i would buy it

    Good luck

I WOULD KEEP LOOKING BECAUSE THE MAINTENANCE AND UPKEEP ON THIS VEHICLE IS VERY EXPENSIVE, TRY LOOKING AT THE HONDA ACCORD OR CIVIC, BOTH ARE MUCH BETTER AND THEY WONT PUT YOU IN THE POOR HOUSE.

    GOOD LUCK

It shouldn't be a problem, it's probably just a little surface rust.
