Quick answers needed! I need to cook him tonight!?

A friend brought us a 10 pound Maine lobster. I don't want to take the chance of him dying prior to cooking, so I would like to get it done tonight. The water is getting ready to boil, but I have never cooked one this big. I will be boiling, not steaming. How long?

Update:

10-13 minutes are normal for chix (1 1/4 pounders). This guy is 8 times that big! I read 37 minutes, but would like some other opinions, as that seems a bit long.

Update 2:

I weighed him myself. 10.2 pounds. I certainly wouldn't have asked how to cook one that big if he really wasn't! I will post a pic on my 360 page this weekend.

Update 3:

Also, there is a maximum size limit for lobsters caught in the Gulf of Maine, but they do not apply in areas south of that. When I said "maine lobster", it was to identify the species, not necessarily where it was caught. This came from a seafood market in CT, and was legal.

Update 4:

BC, I thank you. Your links were good. He was already boiling when I read your answer, but will definately keep your ideas in mind if I ever attempt a lobster this big again in the future. :-)

I'm no expert at cooking them, but I have cooked plenty of crawdads (smaller fresh water crustaceans), usually when they are all red in color they are done. They start out kind of greenish brown.

I am attaching a link that tells you what you need to know about pound/minutes.

I am an expert lobster eater though, so if you have too much give me a note! I once ate a 5 pounder in a restaurant in NJ, quite expensive though!

Get the water to a hard boil and very hot...To be humane to the lobster as it is a living thing. The lobster will turn a bright red color when its done usually about 10 minutes the lobster will be done. If its a little underdone, the meat translucent split the tail and broil for a couple of minutes.

There is no such thing as a legally obtained 10 lb Maine lobster the main shell can only be about 4-5 inches long or it's considered a breeder Are you telling Tall Tales??

There are guidelines online, a good one is this site:

    http://www.ehow.com/how_2072_boil-lobster.html

which has other useful tips. But at 10 pounds, my worry is that boiling might not be your best option - by the time the whole lobster is cooked, the tail-meat could end up rubbery and tasteless. I recommend killing it and removing the meat whilst raw, then chopping it up and stir-frying it Asian style. One great approach (if you like it spicy) is to do it Thai style. Here's a great recipe, with accompanying video:

    All the best!

About 6 minutes, or until it turns red in color. Make sure you have a lid to fit the pot, because the sucker will scream when you stick it in and you don't want to hear that. (I dread doing that). Enjoy.

put your lobster in the freezer for 60 mins this will allow it to go to sleep, sometimes when you put them in alive they can loose their claws. then put it in for 20 mins for every 2 pounds.
