A few questions about upgrading my s 10 truck?
I recently bought a 2000 s 10, with a stock 4.3 v6 4WD, also its a automatic. i was told by a mechanic that it was possible to beef it up with some upgrades.I am by no means a mechanic myself so i come here seeking your more educated minds about auto's. i was wondering what engine, and im guessing upgrading transmission, and springs, also the rear and im guessing mods for the engine mounts and bay would also be part. just wondering on what would be my best bet engine, transmission etc wise. also where would be the best place to purchase them? is there a well known franchise that i could buy from and also have them install at the same place to make things easier? Any help would be appreciated. Also a price estimation would be helpful as well.
Thanks!
Edit: ok, so if i was to keep the engine and trans, would would be the best way to go to get more proformance?
would a K&N cold air kit be worth it?

Well, I would start by directing you to places like JCWhitney.com and Summit Racing.com and 4x4trucks.com to start doing some basic browsing and research on what you want to do. The biggest issue is how much money do you want to spend?? Some nice upgrades to get a minor bump in performance could cost 2 grand... moderate upgrades will cost more like 10 grand, and serious power and handling upgrades will cost more like 25 grand. So, start the thinking there, and figure out what you want to do. Personally, a nice transmission rebuild with a shift kit will help the truck step out nicely. Make sure to inspect and beef up the rear axle if you do any moderate or serious power upgrades, that axle is ok but not meant to take lots of power. Other thing to think on, are you making it a 4x4 mudder kinda vehicle, or keeping street ready and a cruiser, or want to be a stoplight bandit? All these things will affect what will be the best things for you to do to your truck. Here is a basic mild setup (rough ideas) for you to think on.... air intake improvement, transmission rebuild with mild shift kit, free flowing exhaust. ...... now for a moderate setup.... performance exhaust setup including headers, ECM reprogramming with better injectors, better fuel pump, air intake improvement, transmission rebuild with moderate shift kit, brake upgrades, tire and rim upgrades (if making a mudder a lift kit to make more space for the larger tires) and perhaps some light weight reduction ..... for serious setup.... engine and transmission upgrades (stuff a V-8 with a performance transmission in there), better fuel delivery, axle upgrades, brake upgrades, tire and wheel upgrades (mudder upgrades like before plus transfer case and driveshaft upgrades) roll cage installation, more weight reduction. Now the previous "setups" are basic ideas on what you would do, there are many more details on each step, so take your time before you make that first step. It will save you in the long run. Good luck.

Upgrading the engine is what most s-10 owners do. You could spend a little less adding a turbo. You will want cold air intake, probably a new transmission, larger bore size, bigger injectors,. I'm sure there will be a s-10 owner that can better answer your question because I bought a Dakota and it came with a big engine. Good luck you will need it and a whole lot of money to beet a Dakota. (Dakota 5.2L v8 318= 230hp, 4.7L HO= 280hp, 4.7L (2008)=302hp 330tq)

You can swap in a 350 and still use your exsisting transmission. Summit Racing makes a engine swap kit, and it's pretty straight forward and relatively easy to do. I would have a shift improver kit put in your transmission to firm up the shifts. Depending upon where you live there should be some performance shop that can do the swap for you.

replacing the transmission is not worth it since it would be very expensive, you could change the gears in the back. for slightly more power try dual exhaust with new headers, you could put bigger springs in, but the s10 is meant meant to do the job of a 2500 series truck.

well if it is a 4.3 truck --i'd say 5.3 or 6.0 litre with a 4l80e trans to start which reguies a new pc too---and i would reccomend holmans performance to do it right for gods sake he has a 06 mustang in the mid 10's with a stock bottom end 4.6---his number is 405-880-6213(cell)
