Which brand of portable GPS system is best?
I want to buy my husband a portable GPS for Christmas. I can't decide between a Garmin and a Magellan. Does any one know which is rated best? Is one easier to use? Can you purchase additional maps of Europe for one?

well there are the "big" 3; u got "TOM TOM" Garmin"Magellan". there's all the rest, lol. from wht i've experience w/ customers'; everybody knows about tomtom; but my opinion, when it comes to which 1; go w/ wht wrks for u. for ur husband; does he have vision issues? well then a widescreen model would be easier on his eyes. i recommend tht u get him 1 tht has "txt-2-speech". these r the 1's tht tell u the st names, not jus tht ur turn is comin-up in 500ft; lol. all-in-all this a good time 2 get into gps; there all on sale for the season, so w/ a little homewrk u can make out like a bandit. theres built-in functions like "bluetooth, music playr, pic viewr; and theres extras, like live traffic, roadside asst; tht u have 2 pay for. they all can do maps for other loaltions; some come w/ other maps already loaded. they will run u bout $100-$150 for addition maps. there r some gps uit tht have voice command; like some magellans' can do this. u say the magic wrd and u can do some basic commands like; reroute, or take a detour; or find a gas station. 1 thing i strongly reccommend u do is register ur purchase at the manufacturs' website. u get bout 6mnths to 1yr of free map updates. cause it runns u bout; again $100-$150 to buy new maps. i left a link to cnet pg w/ some good info and links. i hope this helps.

I would say Garmin by a small margin. Also look at TomTom they are very good too . Those are the top 3 brands. I have TomTom One and it works fine and is not very expensive.I would personally stay with a top brand , the off brand may or may not be reliable.
