Credit card was credited instead of charged, what to do?

Someone I know's credit card was credited instead of being charged. It has been over a month and they didn't fix it. The credit card company sent the person a check for the amount of the credit.

What should they do about it? Ethically it seems it would be best to bring it to the attention of the company that they made a mistake but at the same time I had something similar happen to me and when I returned the money I had a golf ball smash into my car window when I was driving away! That kinda sticks in my head that maybe I shouldn't have given the money back, that it was meant for me.

I don't know what to suggest to this person because of this experience.

The person said that they would go to the company and ask if there was a balance for the service rendered and if not, then they would cash the check. Is this a good solution?

Update:

To clarify, the credit was from a doctor's office, not the credit card company itself. The credit card company sent the credited amount to my friend in a check. The doctor's office is the one that screwed up, not the credit card company so it's a different situation than a couple of you stated.

Your friend already has a great plan. If they contact the credit company about their account balance and aren't told they owe that money then they should cash that check right away.

In light of the additional details you provided your friend should cash the check and put it in an interest bearing account immediately and not spend a penny of it. The doctor's office will be able to rectify their mistake and charge your friend's card for the credit and the original charge. By putting the money in an interest bearing account your friend maximizes their benefit from the doctor's office's screw up.

I have had the same thing happen to me twice recently. Both times I called them and explained that I did not have an overpayment and they were wrong. One time I cashed the check and the other I just held I kind of played both options just to see what would happen. After a representative from each place personally guaranteed me that the money was mine to cash the check, they both contacted me later for their money the one that I didn’t cash was no big deal they told me to tear up the check. The one that I cash, wanted to charge me principal, interest on a cash advance which is normally over 22%, and a fee for missing payments. This is the funny part I have never missed a payment in my life. It took me several phone calls over several months to get it fixed. I had to have penalties taken of and interest which takes another month to show up.

Resolution: The only thing you can do is to call them and notify them of the situation as they will eventually catch it and send you a bill.

Whatever you do, do not cash the check unless you can prove the money is yours. It may take some time for them to catch the mistake, but they will eventually catch it.

If you cash the check when it is finally caught you will now owe your previous bill and the amount returned to you. They will most likely try to charge you with interest on the previous amount and possible late fees. It just isn’t worth the headache to try to fix it later and try to come up with extra money.

I would leave it alone while understanding that I may eventually owe that money back. The credit card company might figure it out when they’re balancing their books at the end of a quarter or their fiscal year and try to collect.
