I need help with a bit of dog training.?

My dog is an intellegent and quick learner, I'm trying to teach him to sit and stay untill I say break. He does this perfectly, won't budge an inch unless I say break.....but only when I'm holding a treat. How can I get him to do this even when I don't have a treat reward?

Do not ever repeat a command to a dog -- that is teaching them to ignore you -- say the command once and the dog needs to do it. Break the exercise down and retrain as he obviously doesn't know or he wouldn't refuse to do it. If you sporadically treat him (tiny treats not handfuls to chaw on) then he will not know when he will or won't get one so he will do what you say, when he has actually been taught properly, anytime in hopes that this is the time he gets it. You always have treats but the key is not to always give them to him... Also, maybe go to a decent obedience instructor and learn to properly interact and train him as most of obedience training is the owner learning to do it properly - the dogs pick up fast, all dogs are intellegent and quick learners if they are properly worked with... good luck.

btw, the clicker is simply a method of marking specific behavior and then it is clicked/marked and rewarded (i.e. treats) -- you can either mark the behavior with a word, body language or a click - but whatever you mark rewardable behavior with, be consistant and yes, treats are often used but again, after the dog has actually learned the desirable behavior the treating should be sporatic (but always with him thinking you have them :)

Try fooling him for a little while. Have treats in your hand and when he comes to the first recall the first couple of times, give him one. Then call him again but this time instead of a treat, make a big fuss of him. Do this enough times and he will soon learn because he'll be wondering if this time he'll get a treat. Eventually he will just be glad he has pleased you and be satisfied with fussing instead.

I would recomend that you not only reward him with a treat, but also with LOTS of petting aned praise, when he really starts to like this it will work as a treat!

Source(s): good luck and I hope this works well!!!!!!

Just keep repeating, and gradually pet and praise in between treats. Then gradually praise more then treat, they love being praised and making you happy.

Research the clicker method. It works wonders and you dont have to use treats.

You have to repeat the command, more than once, until he listens, practice with him, everyday.
