Why do you need temporary set of dentures and after a years permanent one?

First of all, dentistry is done differently than it was back in

his parent's time. New ways of doing things that give better

results. The temporary dentures are used while the mouth

continues to change after having the teeth extracted. After

the swelling subsides, things heal up, etc., the architecture

of the mouth changes, and the temporary dentures don't

necessarily fit as well as they could . So they make new ones. Not 100% "necessary,", but they will fit better, feel

better, be more secure, stay in place better, not cause as

many sore spots, etc.

Well, I'll add my 2 cents to the other dental professionals who answered. Yes, the bone will shrink and the teeth will not fit the gums as well after a year. Heck, they may not even fit that well at first as the doc has to guess where the bone/gums will be after the extractions take place. In our office we include 1 reline in the cost of the original immediate and it's up to the patient to request when it's done. A lot of the time a reline is all that's needed to make the dentures satisfactory. Another problem which can be addressed with new teeth is the patient can't see ahead of time how the teeth will look when they are inserted [the teeth to be extracted are in the way]. By doing a new set, any discrepancies in the aesthetics can be corrected. Tell your husband good luck and not to expect to ever eat the same again. When he finds out how bad a lower denture is he'll be talking implants.

The denture that will be inserted at the time of his extractions is called an immediate denture, meaning it gets placed at the time of the extractions... teeth come out, denture goes in.

The gums will shrink over a period of time, but usually the denture just needs to be relined (an impression is taken of the healed, smaller arch) instead of having a new one made..

This may be your dentist's way of doing this, but it isn't how we do it in my office... you may want to get another opinion from another dentist....

you need a temporary one because the gum shirnks in between the date of extraction and 6-8 months. meaning that the tempo dentures will loosen as the gum heals. the permanent one is the one ur husband will wear after 6-8 months.

1st set of dentures is only temporary as the gums will shrink after teeth have been taken out so after 6 months or so the original set wouldn't fit. a ( cheaper ) alternative to a new set is to have the original set relined ( new fitting surfaces put on )
