I have not had a job (Just Over Broke) in more than 30 years.
I love what I do for I make as much money as I want and I am able to travel first class all over the world on my own terms.
Anybody who is willing to abandon an employee mentality can do the same these days. Economy is GLOBAL hence we do not depend on availability of opportunities in our city, county nor state or country.
And for all those who want to get quickly out of their financial hole --- just stop digging.
P.S.
Obsidian must be kidding of course. Nobody works for $8.00 an hour anymore. Okay, maybe teenagers at fast food joints but even those get $10.00 an hour plus benefits. In our city anyways.

I teach elementary school and instruct at a local university part time. I would say that my satisfaction level is about 75 percent. The positives are that I enjoy the content of what I do day to day. I don't have any ethical issues about my profession. I am reasonably well compensated, though I despise the union for putting a cap on the earnings of high performing individuals. I teach in a high performing district where the bulk of my day is spent on academics and not on discipline or social work.
If I had a magic wand and could change my profession I would implement a strategy for extraordinary compensation for great teachers and minimum wage for the dead wood that occupies too many classrooms and is protected by seniority and union influence.

This is not the dream job.
It's a book store, and I like reading; the managers are cool, and the clientèle is great.
The pay is only $8 per hour, and they're cutting back hours during this holiday season; a very bad sign.
I've got 15 years of retail experience, and I've been a manager. I'm worth more than this.
