Just 10 to 15 minutes before meals. There are two kinds of medicines. One which lowers the sugar like metformin. It should be taken just 10 to 15 minutes before but other medicine like Daonil which works like catalyst to improve insulin can be taken 30 minutes before meals.

That really depends on WHICH diabetes medicine.
Some medicines should be taken whether or not you eat. Some medicines should be taken before meals. The length of time prior to a meal can vary from 2 hours to just at the start of eating depending on the medicine. Some medicines should be taken after meals.
Check your prescription bottle to see if it says how long before meals. If it just says "before meals," without a timefreame, call your doctor's office or pharmacy to find out what timefreame is correct for YOUR medicine. They will be happy to answer your question.

Oral meds should be taken with the first bite of food. Metformin for one will upset the stomach if taken on empty stomach.
Insulins: read the accompanying info. Some can be taken up to 15 minutes before eating and some can be taken sooner than that.
If eating out, wait til the food is in front of you before taking mealtime insulins or take it immediately after the meal.

The 'correct' timing of diabetic medications depends upon the medication itself. The timing does not matter with glimiperide, glipizide, glyburide, metformin, Actos, Avandia, Junuvia (this is new). There are several other drugs but they are not as commonly used. The timing of long acting insulins does not matter but the timing of rapid acting insulins (Humalog, Novolog)is very important - either 15 minutes before starting or no more than 15 minutes after starting a meal.

It should be taken five to ten minutes before meal, some minutes more or less does not make any much deference
