What do books have over video?
Every time I bring up video people, on this site, get all in a bunch. Books are better than video I get. My question is what makes a book soooo much better than a video. For me I tend to learn better when I can see the action along with the word. Explain how books far excede the video in martial arts. To add I am talking about skill of technique and the like not history or kata, but even with kata I think a video would be so much better than books. Yes I know instruction with a real person is best. I know I'll get several about going to a real instructor. Just keeping topic on video vs. book.

Hi there
For getting the philosophy and history of an art across then books are generally better. However if your trying to understand technique then video is a thousand times better. They say a picture paints a thousand words. That's just what a DVD does.

Books are not better, neither is video.
Not all students learn the same. One might understand written word and another might not see the logic in the words. This is not a flaw in the student... just their nature.
Some video is terrible and some books are terribly written.
Instruction with video is good if you have a solid foundation and high proficiency already. Otherwise, you need a teacher.

If you are talking about a work of fiction, I would prefer a book to a video. But since you are referring to an instructional video, I would rather have a video than a book. We have books to use as a reference for our ju jitsu class.... I find they are only helpful for things I already know. It is difficult to learn from a book, easier when I can see the entire sequence in a video.

different mediums for the same information, some people like books better(diagrams) some people learn better by seeing a video. People prefer books because they are portable and can be carried anywhere. And videos show you the way to do so but usually require a tv or screen, that can be clunky to carry around.

Video, reading is a fundamental but not when it comes to perfecting technique. Its much more interesting to see it rather than trying to imagine it. There's just too much room for imagination in books, which tend to leave interpretation to the leader. Ummm, thats ok for some, but I'd rather see it.
