It is a shame people do not know or were never taught how to spell correctly. Perhaps I was fortunate all those years ago when there were no computers or spell-checks and I had to learn the hard way. I am just thankful I do know how to spell and can string words together to make sentences.

I had an English teacher who took great pride in her subject and instilled this into her pupils. She used to give us dictation which we had to read back to her at the end of the passage including punctuation marks! It was a very valuable tool and one I do not regret to this day.

It is the same with pronunciation - the word 'yes' has the letter 's' on the end of it but the majority of people say 'ye' when they mean 'yes'. This irritates me and so does 'see you later' when they mean 'good-bye' or 'see you soon'. To me it is lazy speech and though the English language is a mighty difficult language - certainly to people who need to learn or speak it - it is still a beautiful one with a wealth of words in it.

You only have to look at Roget's Thesaurus.

Would-be employers like to receive a well-written and composed letter when an individual applies for a job. They can soon tell whether the applicant is educated or not or whether they may be a suitable candidate for a job. It simply is worth the effort to write a well-rounded letter and this does include spelling.

    Just some thoughts................

i'm a translator and proofreader yet i do no longer maximum appropriate people on the internet except asked to because of the fact those that are no longer linguistically minded do only no longer care, it extremely is a waste of time, and it only gets on their nerves. That stated, undesirable grammar, spelling, and punctuation is disturbingly prevalent in the process the internet, persons see it, and, understanding no better, reproduction it; and so the vicious circle is going on until undesirable English is the norm (if it is not already). i could could stop my job to maximum appropriate each and all the errors I see in an afternoon's surfing: this web site is done of errors (no longer consisting of the intentional ones), as many from the preachers of sturdy grammar as from the defenders of illiteracy; the inability or overuse of the apostrophe being the worst (2 Weeks' observe or 2 Weeks observe? sure, even Warner Bros go incorrect, so what wish for something people?). And what can we do while even respected web pages like the BBC are rife with errors? by using the way, the spell verify is sensible yet no longer suitable. I almost positioned "somewhat my job" because of the fact my palms are continually racing forward typing worry-loose words until now my suggestions reaches them to tell them what they could easily be typing. The spell verify does not have picked that up. It probable does not %. up all undesirable punctuation the two, e.g. the version between it is and its. This web site is easily no longer that undesirable while in comparison with many boards i've got seen, so maybe some tolerance could be exercised.

I'm good at spelling, so I use it, not as a spell-check (too many "false positives"), but just to pick up the odd typo.

The best aid to spelling I ever used took me years. It was called "school"!

I only use it if there is a word I am unsure of, so not very often. I do criticize the people who ask a question and spell everything wrong though.

Yes, I use it. I`m not a bad speller but some words elude me. I think spelling and grammar are important. It shows you take pride in written communication.

If my answer is more than a couple of lines. My typing isn't what it should be and the jumble of letters is somewhat confusing to the reader....my spelling isn't perfect either!

My browser has a spell checker anyway so I never have any spelling mistakes.

I always run a check but, I don't usually have any misspellings. I wish it was mandatory for some people though. lol
