mac vs pc performance?
so i got a new windows xp sp2 desktop in 2005. it's still running extremely well and there's nothing wrong with it, except i am going into photography and am completely sick of photoshop lagging ALL THE TIME. additionally, iTunes is a nightmare. so i figure...why not just get a mac?
so i don't wanna ask my parents to spend a lot b/c they are already paying for a lot & my computer is technically doing everything i need.
i hear that mac processor times aren't comparable to those of PCs. i am looking for a used mac, maybe G4, to ask for.
however, my comp is running with an amd 1.9ghz processor. how will switching to, say, a 900mhz - 1.0ghz processor in a mac say G4 desktop compare? will i experience any better performance in a mac-based program, or will the slower processer take away from the performace?
also, will windows-specific files such as .bmp's or .wav's work on a mac? i know a lot of stuff is compatible, but i wasn't sure.
thank you!
yes, i know, 900mhz ~ 1ghz (or G4 for that matter) isnt great. but i can't ask my parents for a $1000 comp every other year.
also, will photoshop v9 CS2 work on it? because i guess it doesn't ship with the latest OS. (its like 10.3 or somehting)
i should also add that photoshop will be the biggest demand of this computer. no gaming. no net usage (only on the other comp so this one wont get messed up). just playing music 24/7 and editing photos.

It is true that you can't really compare performances of a mac and a pc since they are on different platforms, but I will definitely say that after recently switching to a mac that I can feel the difference using photoshop. Though my pc laptop was a year older, just opening photoshop would take almost a minute if not more, where as on my macbook it takes a few seconds.
You also should consider that there are a lot of variables besides processor clock times that could affect your computer's performance- applications that are running simultaneously both by you and in the background, RAM, spyware, etc. I noted that you had also asked about wavs- is all the music on your pc in this format? If so, you should switch them to mp3 as wavs are much bigger in size and playing them in itunes could be the reason for the lagging.
If you don't want to switch over just yet, find out the maximum capacity for your RAM. If it is possible to upgrade it to a higher capacity, you will definitely notice a big performance difference.
In regards to which files, I included a link to apple.com that talks about switching from pc to mac and the files recognized. BMPs and WAVs are recognized, as well as pretty much all formats. Specific files that are saved in specific softwares can only open if that program is available, such as PSDs,SWFs, etc.
In the meantime, save up your money for the mac! I had read everyone saying they had wished they had switched over sooner, and after a month of having my macbook, I agree- it is definitely worth the dent in the wallet!
Good luck!

Depends on what you are going to make use of it for. Work and crap like that? Get both a Studio XPS laptop, an iMac, or the Studio 17 Touch computer. The Studio XPS, and 17 are inexpensive if you do not improve on an excessive amount of stuff on the grounds that the following factor you understand it expenditures you $three,000 lol. Gaming? Get an alienware. With that so much cash, you'll be able to get your self an Alienware Aurora, and that is 10x higher than a mac. $seven-hundred or $500 inexpensive, (is dependent truthfully, should you improve it with like Intel center i7, and incorporate like Office, home windows 7 Ultimate, and different stuff. Next factor you understand it expenditures you $five,000 lol. I might purchase the $a million,299 with out a different enhancements on the grounds that that is already well adequate. Hope it is helping!

--photoshop lagging ALL THE TIME.
If you're a photo art buff, you are best off simply installing Linux (free!) on your PC and getting GIMP (open source equivalent to photo-shop). It has many features that photoshop does not and, under Linux, it runs over 3 times as quickly as on a PC (plus saves you that $500+ you'd spend buying a used MAC).
You can also download GIMP for free on your PC...yet it won't be as fast as Linux, but still likely much faster than photoshop.
Also, to note...Mac OS is based on Linux, so performance should be similar. And Linux supports AAC, mp3, wav, bmp, tga, gif...the only downer is you'll still need to use XP for I-Tunes.
If you try Linux and STILL aren't satisfied, then go for the MAC. BTW MAC PCs are maybe 1.5-2.0 times as fast as PC's for media operations so a 1.0ghz MAC will likely run as fast as a 1.8ghz PC but crash less (so you may still be nearly as well off sticking with your PC)
