An archipelago is a chain or cluster of islands. The word archipelago literally means "chief sea", from Greek arkhon

("leader") and pelagos ("sea"). In antiquity, "Archipelago"

was the proper name for the Aegean Sea. It is now used to generally refer to any island group or, sometimes, to a sea containing a large number of scattered islands like the Aegean.

Archipelagoes are usually found in the open sea; are often volcanic, forming along mid-ocean ridges or hotspots, but there are many other processes involved in their construction, including erosion and deposition. The four largest modern states that are mainly archipelagos are JAPAN, the PHILIPPINES, NEW ZEALAND and INDONESIA.

They are found in nearly every ocean on Earth. Others include: ARCTIC OCEAN--Canadian Arctic Archipelago,

Queen Elizabeth Islands , New Siberian Islands , etc.; ATLANTIC OCEAN--Bermuda Islands , British Isles' Channel

Islands, Falkland Islands, Canary Islands, CARIBBEAN SEA--West Indies , Puerto Rican Islands , Virgin Islands , the Bahamas ; and PACIFIC OCEAN/OCEANIA-- Malay Archipelago (the world's largest) , New Guinea , Fiji Islands , *Solomon Islands , *Gilbert Islands (Kiribati) , *Mariana Islands , *Marshall Islands (these last 4 groups--with the stars-- were the scene of many WWII battles) , Hawaiian Islands (Sandwich Islands) , Samoan Islands (Navigators' Islands) , American Samoa (Eastern Samoa), Samoa (Western Samoa) , Tonga Islands (Friendly Islands), Tokelau (Union Islands), and Tuvalu (Ellice Islands) --to name a very few.

Perhaps, the best known Archipelago is that of the Americas' GALAPAGOS ISLANDS, home to some of the strangest-looking animals on Earth.
