Flying Bugs?

I remember a flying bug that had lights in their behinds, or it seemed they did. They were flying bugs. I haven't seen them since I was a kid. The name that keeps coming to mind is Lightening bug or something like that. Is this a dream I had or were they for real? If they were real are they still around? What are they called? Where can I go to read about these?

They are still around, lightening bugs, or fire flies...they are actually a beetle, and are only out when it's warm, and I usually see them in tall grass, or cornfields...rarely out in the open.

They have a separate organ under their abdomens that when they release a chemical to attract a mate, makes them light up intermittently, so when they're all out in the summer, it will look like a bunch of flickers of light out in a field.

It's actually quite a nice sight!

Yes, they are still around and they are real...no offense but have you been in a cave or something since you were little because i've seen lightingbugs around at night all the time not so much in the winter though--to cold-- and the like but part of the bug is what glows not the head

  • We use to call them June bugs. You could always find them in the summer time. I haven't seen them since I was a kid though. Hope this helps.

Lighting Bugs, Fireflies are common names for them. Bugguide is my favorite bug site... They are in the family Lampyridae.

Yes, they are real and still around. They are known by several names, but I grew up calling them fire flies. I believe they can still be found in rural areas.
