Is it possible for my vet to check my dog's eye sight?

My dog is 15 years old - and his eyes are getting cloudy (I know this is normal in older pets). I also realize it's affecting his eye sight. Is it possible for a vet to see just how bad his eyesight actually is? Or are there no tests in place for something like that?

yes a vet is able to test for this, but look for one that does CERF as they are educated in the canine eye and are able to better tell you what is wrong and how to help it.

If the dogs eyes are getting cloudy then at that age there's a good chance it has cataracts. They are quite common in older dogs.

Most dogs that develop cataracts are not affected badly by the decrease in sight. They learn to cope over time as the developement of the cataracts is gradual. Your dog will appreciate if you don't move the furniture around a lot and show it where stuff is if you do.

You could get the cataracts operated on at great expense, but I have heard that this can sometimes be more stressfull for the dog as a sudden change in sight is harder on it. At that age the surgery may also be a bad idea as it may put undue strain on the organs.

First, tell them to organize furniture the way they wouldn't mind it staying for a while. The best way to help her is to let her get used to where everything is now so she does not run into it when she is blind. Also there are surgeries to help fix this if it is in the price range. Also now that she is loosing her vision she will be more agressive because of the fact that she can't see what it is that is grabbing on her or attacking her and she does not know if you are friend or foe.Start talking to her calmly for a while before touching her and then touch her head and slowly pet her while talking to her and let her smell you so if she does loose all her vision she will recognize the scent and not feel threatened and always give her treats at the end so your smell is associated with rewards!

Yes a vet could check the dog's eyes, but since you say the dog is old, I'm thinking that he might have nuclear sclerosis, which is common in older dogs (my 12 year old has it), but it doesn't really affect the vision. You should look it up.

There's little your normal day-practice vet can do to check eyesight, beyond testing whether or not the dog can see. Usually, they'll wave their hand close to the face (WITHOUT touching eyelashes or whiskers), and if the dog flinches, it's a sign of sight.

Yeah sure the vet will sort it out let you know whats wrong may be even an eye test might not be necessary just a light shined in the eyes! The vet will know whats wrong :)

Yes, Vets do check up for their sight. So you should ask him to perform a test for your dog.
