I'm new to the computer & I find that my purchases tend to get me into hot water?

I just got an external Hard drive and now I can't get it to work my laptop does not recognise it so it won't let me do anything with it I am on a fixed income so any help is appreciated (my laptop is an IBM A21m and I need the drive for additional memory 20 Gigs is not enough)The drive is made by seagate and is 40 Gigs thanks And the case is a coltech

    Well hard drives are plug and play, is the usb cord conected properly, if so then check any power cords conected to the hard drive, its possible the hard drvie is defective.

    You might need drivers Maybe.Id call the store and talk to a tech.
