My dog doesn't want to eat?

I have a 5 month old Golden Retriever and he is eating very little of his food lately. I took him to the vet a couple of days ago and there seems to be nothing wrong with him. Still my dog only looks at his food when I put it in his plate. He will eat the food off my hand but not off the plate. What can I do to get him to eat his food without giving him something different than dog food?

It's smart of you to check in with your Vet - a normally healthy dog will not let himself starve, but one of the first signs of a problem is a dog that suddenly stops eating.

If you are quite sure that your dog is healthy, then set your dog's bowl of food down for 2 minutes. Then, pick it back up again and wait until next meal time to try again - and in the meantime, no treats, no chewies, nothing. If your dog is healthy, he will not let himself starve. Sounds like your dog is trying the common canine ploy of, "I'm going to hold out for something better than mere dog food!" which dogs try to do a lot. Stick to your guns!

    Good luck!

You could try adding water to it if it is dry food. If it is wet, he just may not like it.

If you have been feeding him people food he might be trying to tell you that he will not eat dog food and expects people food.

I suggest you stay away from people food, try adding water to his food and if this doesnt work, try a new flavor of the brand you currently use if possible.

I feed my dog iams and eventually learned that my dog will only pick at the lamb flavor, but has no problem with any of the other iams flavors

I had the same problem with my dog when we adopted her. She was recovering from a cold and could not smell her food, even though her cold symptoms were gone. Try mixing wet dog food in with the kibble, it has a VERY strong smell. If you do not want him on wet food, try warming up some chicken broth and mixing it in with the kibble. Good Luck, I hope this helps!

Many dogs can be afraid of the bowl or plate if the bowl or plate moves while they eat.

My parent's dogs. what they do is put the food on a paper towel.

Try to entice him to eat by putting a few treats or a bit of wet food on top of it (if you feed him dry food, or vice versa if you feed wet).
