Mini-gifts for brother in nursing home??

My sister is trying to make each day special in December for our 60 year old brother in a nursing home. She can't spend much, so we need ideas of under a dollar if possible per item. We're trying to stay away from candy as he's put on too much weight as he can't exercise (paralyzed in one leg and arm). Please help us with some ideas to entertain or amuse him.

Try second hand store for books or audio books. Magazines are great. Videos and DVD's can be had cheap if you ask around at work. A photo album is a good idea.

She could arrange for one family member or friend to call him on each day. I'm guessing that he may have had a stroke, but just explain to each caller that he still likes to hear them and think of them even if he can't fully express what he wants to say back, he understands.

Postcards and Christmas cards are pretty cool. Get a stamper that says "from Paul" or whatever and some stamps. He might like to send some cards. (you'll have to collect address from his family and friends)

    Word puzzle books

    Sudoku books

    Lotions

Burn a CD mix of his favorite songs from a long time ago

Go to a Dollar Tree store (if they have them there)

or a 99 cent store, you will find an amazing amount of little gifts to fill a basket or bag with!

Buy him some old videos of shows that were on in the 50s, If you cannot find any, look for some home videos to show him, and remind him of his loving family. Also, you could make him a photo album that he could look at every once and a while. Good luck!

How about some packages containing blown up balloons with some funny faces drawn on them?

That's a hard question to come up with ideas for.

I wish your brother all the best.

Get permission to take him out to dinner, and to a movie. Bring pictures of your family to put up on his bedroom wall to remind him he is loved. Visit him often, if only for a short while.
