My 17yr old daughter was just diagnosed with Mono. Should she stay home?

Her doctor said she didn't need to stay home from school unless she felt the need to. But I have known so many with mono that all stayed homeand many that became very very ill. She has been cast in a play at school she really wants to do ...but I really want her to get well. Any body out there know of mild cases of mono? Any advice?

She should absolutely stay home! She is contagious.

It totally depends on how she feels. If the doctor didn't restrict her, I'd say that's good. However, she should avoid any contact sports or anything that would cause a hit to her abdomen. With mono, the person's spleen is enlarged in 50% of cases, and a hit to the abdomen could cause the spleen to rupture. That is a rare event, but can happen.

Having had mono I can tell you that if she needs to stay home you will know it. I slept for 4 days without waking up. No food, no water, no bathroom. I simply could not move. Once I got up I went to work. Let her body determine what she needs and doesn't need.

For a few days. The thing about mono is that it causes your spleen to swell or enlarge. Any type of physical activity where she might take a hit could rupture her spleen. Maybe a couple of days out with a note "No physical education" for a while!!!!

  • Absolutely.

I knew this one girl who came down with mono and she ended up having to be home schooled for the rest of the year.

But if she thinks she can do it, let her. If it gets bad, make her stay home.

A big danger of mono is getting injured and having her spleen rupture. Have her stay home.
