What are the psychological differences between saying "I love you" and "Mommy loves you" to a child or pet?

A pet will not give a toss.

A child will learn that the love is attached to a specific person with a title attached, but I don't think that it really matters. It is a bit cloying to hear 'mommy loves you' but then that might be because I am English and we tend to think that mommy sounds a bit ridiculous.

    "Mommy loves you" denotes ownership.
