Non carbohydrate wrap? I have diabetes and have to avoid bread?

and crackers and tortillas. But I would really like to find something in which I could wrap up my sprouts and chicken and cucumbers. Is there anything like this? Maybe made out of seaweed? (Please don't tell me I can have carbohydrates if I only eat a little - believe me, I know what will send my blood sugar sailing.)

and I have high cholesteral, so I try to avoid cheese. Also, I know that you can eat the taco or sandwich filling without the bread or tortilla.

Thanks a bunch!

You're in quite a pickle (a great food for diabetics, btw). I'm not sure why you can't have those things, unless you have some new form of diabetes that I haven't heard about. As long as you're consuming high quality (not refined) carbs and burning what you take in, there is no reason you shouldn't have them. It's excess and low quality carbs that cause problems. Without carbs (including sugars), your brain would cease to function. If "a little" is sending your "blood sugar sailing", something is desperately wrong. You failed to mention if you're a type 1 or 2. I'm guessing type 2 from the hints in your question.

If I were you, I would get Dr. Fuhrman's book, "Eat to Live....". Here's a link: http://www.drfuhrman.com/disease/default.aspx

He and I are in total agreement on what foods a type two diabetic should eat. I've been following a similar diet for over a year, and (natural) carbs don't spike my glucose at all. My readings are typically in the "normal" range of 80 to 110 and my most recent HbA1C was 5.8.

If his site doesn't float your boat, check out this site: http://www.diabetesimprovement.com/

Finally, If you are a type 2, you should read what I've put together here: http://www.geocities.com/seabulls69/Type_II_Diabet...

At any rate, don't cut out the carbs completely. The ketones from fats are most certainly not the optimal fuel for the brain.

My husband is also a diabetic (type 2) for almost 20 years. Although you should not eat white bread, it most definately is okay to eat 100% whole wheat. There is a bread called "Carb Counters" that only has 5g of impact carbs on your blood sugars. Also, you can now buy whole wheat tortilla wraps which have 10g of carbs. Wheat bread will increase your blood sugars, HOWEVER, it does it over a slower period of time because it doesn't contain the sugar that white bread has, and therefore does not make your bloodsugar "spike".

I would also suggest you go to a Diabetes training class to learn what you should and shouldn't eat and what things (including over the counter medications) will have an effect on your blood sugars. You will learn that you should eat 6 times a day, including breakfast, lunch and dinner - all of which should have a total of 60g of carbs. You should eat 3 snacks (between breakfast and lunch; lunch and dinner; and before bed) which should be no more than 20g of carbs total. You need the last snack to keep your blood sugars level overnight until you get up and eat breakfast the next day. Also, if you exercise (which is highly recommended) you should eat the carbs 1 hour prior so your sugars stay UP and don't fall during exercise. Good luck to you.

p.s. Carbs are necessary for proper brain function so please do not cut them out of your diet.

With the newer types of insulin these days, diabetic diets aren't necessarily as restrictive as they used to be. Read here https://tr.im/S4PB1

As with any medicine or diet change, you should discuss it with your doctor. Fruits, both fresh and dried, have a natural sugar in them that will raise blood sugar levels, so be careful about eating too much. Not sure about the nuts. Moderation is always the key. I've been diabetic for 18 years and just recently changed insulin types. I love it because it gives me more freedom in when and what I eat.

Every plant item, including seaweed, has at least some carbs, but some are just very low in carbs. Your sprouts and cucumbers definitely have carbs in them. I would suggest a lettuce wrap.

Try one slice of whole grain bread per meal and see how it works for you. Check 2 hours after eating.
