Alternative to rawhide bones?

Question

I have a large (fat!) yellow lab who can chew through a pigs ear in 5 minutes. She loves the big rawhide bones we give her and she can chew through those in an hour or less. I've read that they're bad so I think we shouldn't give them to her. She doesn't like toys...only her ball. Plastic squeaky toys don't amuse her. She chews these bones and leaves little shards all over the house. She also coughs and almost throws up...what's a safe alternative that I can easily buy from a pet store?

Regular raw bones should be fine, like ones you would find in a grocery store.. Raw bones aren't prone to splintering like a cooked bone would... I give my dogs beef soup bones from time to time..

Rawhide ANYTHING makes my dog sick. Like your lab...she can chew them up easily and swallows  large chunks. There are fairly large "smoked" bones at pet supply stores and supermarkets...cow tibia and such that she likes...but I give them to her outside til the yucky brown stuff is gone...it stains carpet. Some of these WILL break off...and I throw them out right away...but over the years...two out of three stay pretty much in one piece and she will play with one for months. I put a scrape of peanut butter inside once in awhile as a treat...and she will play for hours to get at it...even though she doesn't like peanut butter flavored dog treats. If your butcher will cut six to eight inch pieces from the center of the fresh long bone...these are wonderful....but you have to keep them washed off til they're dried out or you'll get bugs or maggots!  Don't cook them; cooked bone splinters!  Have fun. Lucky dog!  Hugs, Gina C.

Rawhide, Greeneis, and Nylabones are all known to cause intestinal blockages. 
Your best bet would be marrow bones, which you can find at the meat counter of your grocery store. They're cheap, long lasting, and do a great job of cleaning and maintaining your dogs teeth.

Pigs ears are worse for dogs than rawhide are.. Neither are good treats really, and never while the dog is unsupervised. But pigs ears are recalled all the time due to salmonella, and they cause pancreas problems in dogs.

I get my dogs the big white real bones. They chew on them for months. They keep getting shorter as they chew on them. They love them.

We play frisbee with our big dog - Booda makes a tough frisbee they can also chew. Maybe some exercise with it could help you dog's weight problem.
