math question?

Can you give an example from real life where you would want to use an exponential or logarithmic equation?

I am looking for a good example that can eaisly be explained :)

    exponential functions are used in calculating interest. The general formula is:

    N = ne^(rt)

    n = the initial money value.

    r = interest rate in decimals

    t = the compound time such as, weather it's compounded yearly or monthly.

    "Logarithms:

    Logarithms are used in measuring many physical quantities. The scale that is used to measure earthquakes, the Richter Scale, involves a logarithm. Likewise the scale that is used to measure the loudness of sound in decibles involves a logarithm. They are often used in studying population growth and radioactive decay. Logarithms also arise in some financial calculations, for example those involving interest rates. Just last week I learned from a graduate student in geography that she was using logarithms to study the rate of melting of glaciers." (derived from the source)

    There are a lot in physics and statistics (eg. radioactive decay, normal distributions), if you are ok at integrating then all you need to say is that e appears whenever you have an equation that looks like this:

    dy/dx = y

    which solves to

    x = c.e^y

    You get these whenever you have a situation where the rate at which something is changing depends on how much you have got. For example in radioactive decay, the rate at which atoms decay depends on how many atoms you have got to start with.

    Hope this helps!
