Oven Problem with 1950's Wedgewood Stove?

We have an old Wedgewood stove. The oven usually starts up and reaches the temperature. However I usually have to push the safety valve to get the oven started and sometimes the oven burner will shut off. This usually happens when the temperature reaches and the oven burner goes off, but it does not seem to restart when the temperature falls. I usually have to push the safety valve to start the oven back up. Recently, I can't keep the oven on. I push the safety valve button and the oven burner goes on, but then as soon as I release the button the oven burner goes out. The pilot light is going at all times.

Do I need a rebuilt safety valve? The oven never seemed to work since we installed the oven. Is rebuilding the safety valve a do it yourself project?

What is the safety valve for anyways?

The safety valve senses the gas on and no flame burning. It shuts off to keep your oven from filling with gas. The valve needs to be replaced, there is no way to rebuild it.

yes you can do it yourself but make sure you seal everything with a clear sealer that is heat proof and check it out with the gas company they are more then happy to come out for free to check it out
