BBC sports personality have I missed the point?

Having watched some of the BBC sports personality of the year awards programme, and seen the telephone numbers for people to vote for their chosen personality, watched the voting close, and viewers being warned not to telephone anymore or they may be charged, I was astounded to see that the winner was in Las Vegas and there was a trophy (albeit a replica) already there?! What was the point of people telephoning if the decision had already been made? Is this yet another telephone scam or have I missed the point?

Update:

But there weren't just three to choose from there were 10! How many camera crews do they have around the world? No wonder the TV licence is so expensive.

Update 2:

Country Bumpkin I am not your 'mate' and I'm well aware both men in Vegas were boxers, my point is when 10 people can be elected by telephone why would they fly a replica trophy over to Vegas on the off chance that one of them would win.

Update 3:

Chris b you are quite right.

The replica trophy was at the awards ceremony, if you watch the presentation again, you'll see that the trophy with the sheilds of who won it previously was out in vegas with the boxers. I think that it was already decided that Joe Calzage would win the award.

It was a bit dodgy, wasn't it? When I saw Lennox Lewis there with the trophies and Ricky Hatton and Joe thingy not looking ever so surprised, I did wonder what the point of the phone vote was.

Apart from that Lewis should have won anyway.

Perhaps there were like 5 people who could win, so they had crews near each one with a replica trophy.

I'll not be so cynical and say that with two people from the top 10 in LV, and one who was almost certain to win had he won the fight last night, then putting a replica over there was a good call...but who really knows.

Actually I think the idea that a 'sportsman' of any merit can also be a 'personality' of merit, in the sense that the general public will be able to assess both qualities is complete hooey. Media 'personalities' are quite a breed apart and not what I would rate as meritful.

  • 2 of those were in Vegas both boxers. and both won because they were on the list Joe cawazargie 1st and Rikki hatton 3rd.about time it went to real sportsmen.you have missed the point mate.

Maybe, say there are 3 people to choose between, then there are three camera crews, with three trophies, just in case either one of the three wins. They just dont show the losers.
