Football, baseball glove, basketball (any kind of ball, really), gift certificate at Foot Locker, anything he can build stuff with, video games, DVD of a cool movie, CD player.

And good for you for doing such a nice thing at Christmas!

The Salvation Army Giving Tree I worked at didn't group kids by race so I find that a little odd. And they usually have their sizes and wishlist on the tag.

Most boys like toy cars and action figures. Spiderman, Transformers and Pirates are popular. They also probably need a new set of clothes, shoes, coat, etc.

Since you took the time to point out that this is no ordinary 8 year old boy, but an "African-American" 8 year old boy, and that he is also "black", I presume that you think 8 year old boys with descendents from Africa and/or are dark skinned might like different things than those who have no descendents from the African continent and/or are light skinned because you took the time to comment on his ancestry and visual appearance. I am curious how you know he has ancestors from the African continent. Please enlighten us if you have the time or inclination to do so.

Some people with a higher concentration of melanin in their skin than others might have, originated in places other than Africa. Have you asked him where he is from? Have you queried him on his ancestry and if so, how far back can this child definitively argue for his actual background in order for you to assert that he is indeed African-American? How does he feel about being labeled both "black" and African-American" by you?

On that I have no opinion or insight to offer, because I have never had descendents from the African continent that I am aware of or have ever had any contact with - and I am rather light skinned although I do have dark skin when I spend too much time in the sun. I don't see where that has ever changed my opinion on what is a good gift to recieve but I also admit I have never actually conducted a study on it.

On your topic as I see it, I do know that when I was an 8 year old non-prefixed American boy I liked anything that could be programmed, flew, or otherwise had some kind of action associated with it. Model airplanes, cars, ships, action figures, video games. I have only to assume he would be the same because though you preface his ancestry with "African" he is nevertheless American now. I was an 8 year old American boy once. I am therefore qualified to comment on what they like.

    Good luck to you!

Black boys want the same things white boys want. Legos, toy trucks, video games, action figures.

My brother is really into Legos, Transformers, Bionicles, baseball, cowboys, Star Wars, dancing weirdly, cars, pokemon, Harry Potter, music, and that's about all I can think of now.

in my company we had this thing call the giving tree and last year I had this African American little boy named Jamin. he was 9 and he asked for remote control car. I think that was what most ofthe little kids in the giving tree asked for too.

why would you mention that he is an 8 year old BLACK boy if you didn't want advice on the racial element?

I'm giving my 8 year old friend a transformer.

because I want to play with it.
