How do you go to sleep after skating a late night hockey game?

I had a game at 9:15pm - 10:15pm. By the time I get home its about 11pm.

Its 1am. I'm wide awake. Usually means not sleeping till 4am.

What tricks do you do to help you fall asleep when you have a late night game?

I've done the beer thing. I've done sleeping pills. Never together of course.

I can never find a way to fall asleep before 2 or 3am. Which makes 8 or 9am work very hard.

This is my 4th or 5th year of abusing my sleep cycle like this. There has to be a better way.

Update:

So my options are:

1. Booze

2. Pills

3. Sex

I'll take Haley and a Hot tub please.

You know, a good woman could fix that for you. ;)

You should probably try to warm up properly and warm down properly. After playing a game, you should do some stretches, before jumping in the shower. This sounds somewhat girly, but it is really effective.

1)Well to me the Tinted visor has helped me becuase they cant see my eyes as well, so they don't really know where my pass will go or in a shootout the goalie has a very hard time seeing where I am looking. But a disadvantage is that it darkens up the ice and puck so you have to always have your eyes open and looking sharper, the yellow visor my friend uses and I used for one game and it actually brightens up the ice and the puck so you can always see the play more clearly. 2. Yes I think the tinted visors should be allowed in the NHL because it still acts as a protective layer to your eyes and some of your nose depending and what type you get. and it being a different color shouldn't matter much becuase it is to help the players playing style. 3. the last I was reading about it that they gave out 5 prototypes to different players in the NHL, and later it went to about 50 and more and more players started requesting the prototypes and models of the skate blade, I'm not sure if teams are using them now becuase I don't read much about the blades these days. But that is the last I heard. 4. The new jersey's are made with a more breathable fabrics and also lighter and more open in different areas to help with the move-ability and flexibility with the player and his gear underneath. I was watching a interview with players about the new jerseys and they all said it feels better and allows them to move better. So if it works for them it works for the any player.

Don't ever take the sleeping pills route!!

    1. They will damage your liver big time and you can get into serious health problems.

    2. You will get hooked up on them and you won't be able to have a normal life any more if you don't take your pills everyday.

The sleeping pills industry is damaging our health by capitalizing on our ignorance, and by distracting people from effective and natural ways to deal with this problem. I had been taking prescription sleep medications [Ambien] for over 5 years. It stopped working and I simply took more. Still did not work. Nights were very difficult - medication put me to sleep but I would wake up after 2–3 hours with a strong sympathetic response (fast pulse, pounding heartbeat, wide awake alert). It was a very difficult cycle to break. I was really in bad shape due to lack of sleep.

After years of struggling I was able to cure my insomnia naturally and pretty fast. I followed the Sleep Tracks sleep optimization program, here is their official web -site if you want to take a look: http://www.insomniacure.net/

    Ohhh..and Good Luck!

THere are no tricks, but i have the same problem.

THere are probably too many things in ur head at that time, maybe going over the hockey game and stuff. So basically my trick is to just picture pitch darkness. Just pretend ur looking at the sky and keep it like that for like an hour. If that doesnt work , then he** with that, just go talk with some gurls on the fone or something

    haha

I can't really offer any davice, I had the same problem in my gymnastics gladiating days. Hasn't changed, but ya know. sports. I could never make the drive home from Detroit to Buffalo, get in at 2, then fall asleep and be all chipper for school the next day. A lot fo it is just the way you're wired.I still beg to work third shift over first, I like you, just can't keep that kind of schedule that's conducive to the 9-5.

I'm gonna sound like a pusher, but the only thing that has really helped me to get even a few hours of sleep in situations like this is a prescription, and I had to try a lot fo things before I found one that worked.

What works for me is having a few (2 to 3) beers, & 2 mg of Melatonin (non-habit forming sleeping aid)...Within 30 minutes you'll feel groggy, & will fall asleep soon after.

10:30 games on weekday nights tear me up when I gotta get up at 6 to get the kiddo ready for school and myself for work. After 3 or 4 Molsen Ices, 200mg of ibuprofin and a nice long soak in the hot tub and I'm draggin myself out...I wouldn't mind trying the "Haley method" lol!

Yeah those last night games sure suck! I vege out in front of the telly for at least an hour, gives me time to wind down and to stop thinking about the game I've just played.

I am right there with you.... Been there done that.

The best way for me, is to put on a favorite CD, turn the volume up just enough to hear it, but not too loud to keep you awake, and let the music carry you off to sleep.

It is just enough of a distraction to let you fall asleep.

    Good luck,

    Stevo.
