Well, it's tradeoff.
Personally I have both and most of the time we watch the projector for HDTV and movies. The HDTV in the den is used when we can't be bothered moving to the HT.
Here are some considerations for you to think about.
- projectors require a larger space, but they are much better for several viewers --- like having friends over for the game or a movie.
- Picture quality can be better than at the movies (with less interuptions, non sticky floors and cheaper popcorn). I have an LCoS 720p projector and a 110" screen with a 7.2 sound system ... no way ANY LCD display comes close in viewing enjoyment ... and today you could get even better projectors.
- Costs to buy are similar for the same resolution (minimum ~$500 for 480p, ~$1000 for 720p and ~$2200 for 1080p) although you get a much bigger screen with a projector (100"-120" if you want ... although a 30-40 degree viewing angle (angle between right and left screen edges seen from your preferred viewing location) is the real objective (so bigger isn't necessarily better).
- LCD will cost less to maintain. Projectors require lamp replacements every 2-4 years (depending on use) and this costs ~$400. But, amortize that over 2-3000 hrs of big screen entertainment (<$0.25/hr) and it's still pretty cheap ... you will spend more on popcorn!
- You also have to be more careful with projectors to protect the lamp. For example, no fast on-off cycles, use a UPS to ensure adeqaute lamp cooldown even if there is a power cut, and clean air filters every 6 mo or so.
- You can use projectors with ambient light but need a light controlled (dim -- dark) room to get the most out of a projector (but then LCD HDTVs don't look their best in bright rooms either).
- projectors need a screen but DIY screens can be done for under $100 that compare to $1000 commercial models.
- Projectors can actually be less obtrusive in a room than a large LCD panel. The projector can be shelf or ceiling mounted out of sight and screens can be hidden / rolled up.
- Installing a projector is more work and more complex than an LCD ... but you do it once and it is a feasible DIY project (In my case I built my first home theatre -- drywall, wiring, soundproofing, screen -- from scratch and moved and reinstalled the projector and built a new screen in a second home myself).
- One final consideration, if you want the same sharpness as a good LCD display you really want a 1080p projector.
- So, if you want turnkey and low maintenance go for the LCD, but if you want the closest thing to (or even better than) a movie theatre at home and/or want a group watching experience you need a projector.
If still interested, have a look at the list of recommended models at the first link and read more info and reviews at this and the other sites.

I'll try make this a simple answer. I have a hi def sony projector mounted on my ceiling. Since its hi def, it has hdmi, component, and regular yellow video inputs. I have my 360 hooked up to mine with hdmi and its amazing at 80 inches. If your room is big enough you could easily get away with like a 120 inch screen. That's double what you can get with an lcd/plasma. So here's how it works. You mount it on the ceiling, and then run a long hdmi cable and a component cable if you need it. send that to the back of your reciever, and hook up your electronics through your reciever. If you have a good reciever, you won't lose any video quality. If you have drop ceilings it will be easier to run the wires. If not, then paint them the same color as the ceiling and run them up there. Since you need to hook up everything to a reciever, you won't be worrying about what sounds better, because you'll be using surround sound. Once you have it hooked up, project it on the wall and decide what size screen you want before you buy the screen. The projector is definetly the best way to go for home theatre, but here is the con. The room needs to be relatively dark. I hope this was simple enough, and go with blue ray if you can.

If you are a game player there's no doubt that the biggest picture comes from a front projector. You'll never play another game on an ordinary LCD -- they are just not overwhelming! Go for a front projector!
Good luck!

LCD for ease of use and use in any lighting.
Projector if you want a big theater display in a dark room and if you like buying a new lamp every so many months for whatever the lamp costs.

LCD.
Best value and performance is the Samsung 71 series. Sony XBR4 is excellent as well but more expensive. Samsung has the better contrast ratio and price. Both have the 120hz refresh rate.

This one is simple.
LCD if the room has a lot of windows.
Projector in a room easily darkened.
