What do you think about the possibility of a United States of Europe?

I have to admit I like the idea of it, but not the reality of Europe at the present moment..But as Europe becomes more fractured on ethnic and nationalistic lines a perhaps a USE would draw us all together again into something altogher stronger. And with the emergence of China as a superpower, perhaps another democratic superpower alongside the USA wouldnt be too bad a thing.

The idea of a USE is unrealistic due to the past of the European nations, since the have always like their freedom and independence from each other, even now with the EU, they still debate over giving the central EU govt. more power.

I can't see the EU ever becoming as much of a government as the US federal government is. There will always be a France and a Germany, and they will always be more significant on the world stage than New Mexico or Wyoming is.

The states in the EU are mature successful entities capable of surviving on their own, but coming together for convenience. The colonies that banded together to form the US were much less capable of being independent states, most were underpopulated, and after the first thrteen, most were formed with the express intent of joining the US, rather than being independent entities (Texas being somewhat of an exception). As a result they are much more "regions of a country" than the EU countries would ever be.

When ever the government takes something on they do a great job. Look at public schools and the U.S. postal system. They are awesome. I hope you realize that "cheaper" health care equals less quality. There will be waiting lists for anything that isn't life threatening. You might say so what, but if you need surgery, yet have to wait up to or more than a year I will be wishing you had private insurance. We are trying to model the systems of nations that have a fraction of the population that America has. The stupidity is overwhelming.

As a Brit, I would prefer to be part of the United States than Europe. I don't want Russia & Germany telling our country what to do.

At least with the Americans we know they have morality and stand up for themselves and the world as a whole.

We have gone from defeating the idea of being run by Hitler to signing up to be run by the next Hitler. What did my grandfather fight for? We've given Britain away.

Isn't that sort of what the EU is supposed to be? It would appear that Europe is already heading down that road.

Never going to happen. The US is to different from Europe now. 20 years ago I could have seen it happen, but not now.

I pity the Europeans if they end up like the US. Isn't their union supposed to be complete in 2009?
