Anyone else sick of gift cards being the gift to give/get for Christmas?

Hey I am like anyone else, I appreciate a good gift card once in awhile...but really I think the trend is getting a bit outta hand...what happened to the days where people went shopping in search of the perfect most thoughul gift...and then when given the other person actually appreciated, used and did not return it!

call me old fashioned but isn't that what the spirit of christmas is about??

I so agree with you. The problem is that so many people think that Christmas is about getting exactly what they want. Even children make lists of specific things they demand. It's more like a shopping list, than a wish list. I even know adults who register themselves at amazon so people they know buy what they want. Funnily enough they are the very ones who tend to buy the cheapest gifts and never inquire as to what someone else may enjoy.

It's crazy and I think we all feel the burden of having to comply with these demands but there comes a time we must say, enough is enough.

Give a gift from your heart and if the person doesn't appreciate it, then don't buy them anything next year.

Gift cards are fine. My uncle always gives me a gift card, to Toys-R-Us when I was little, to Borders or Barns and Nobles now that I'm older. A gift card IS a real gift and there is no way to ask someone for something else without sounding like a spoiled brat. You and your children are lucky to get the gift cards. Maybe it's not exactly what you want, but some kids aren't getting ANYTHING so it's way past time you take a step back and appreciate what you do get.

The Spirit of Christmas is lost if all everybody thinks about is

    what presents to get/give.

With mass production of 100 of the same thing you see in every store, a gift card is a good way to be sure that person will get exactly what they want. Even though Aunt Sue always

claims to 'be on a diet' & you don't think she would like that huge box of chocolates, with her gift card, she might decide to splurge on some goodies, & she will be quietly saying "thank you".

Personally I love gift cards, the creativity comes in how it's presented & what your thoughts were behind it.

I agree sometimes it seems like people take the easy way out and just buy a gift card rather than spend the time and energy looking for a gift. However, I do find a lot of people like to get them since they are picky and can go out and get exactly what they would like or other people are just really hard to buy for since they never mention things they would like or seem to have everything already.

yeah but for some people that do this gift card giving they just want to make sure that the person receiving the gift will appreciate it and will actually get what he/she needed instead of that ugly scarves that he/she will never wear lol!

I really appreciate gift cards. These days, no one wants more clutter, knicknacks, and ugly sweaters. You might as well spend money wisely. If the person gives me cards to Blockbuster, Barnes and Noble or Starbucks, their money has been well-spent and I'm happy.

I refuse to give gift cards (never have given one). And I don't donate to office pools that give gift cards to 'needy' children with giftcards and PSIIIs on their Christmas list.

i understand what you are saying, but it they way things are today, who has time to shop and search and drive to get one thing at one store and something else at another.

trying to find what people want is hard, everything goes so fast it's sometimes impossible to find what they want. plus, finding the right color, size and style is hard. if it's electronics, what options, software and compatiblitiy is it?

sometimes it just better to let someone get it themselves.
