The most important would be the amendments outlawing slavery and giving 'equal protection under the law' (13, 14, 15). Other key events include:
3/5 compromise (slaves are 3/5 of a person to the govt.)
Eli Whitney invents cotton gin (cotton would not have been a major crop without it, and the growth of slavery had a lot to do with cotton)
Dred Scott decision (property rights trump anti-slavery laws)
Emancipation Proclamation (a power proclamation of the North's intention to free slaves--it didn't free anyone itself though.)
13th Amendment (freed the slaves)
14th and 15th Amendments (Equal protection (and some other stuff) amendments--used a century after passing to end states' rights to pass segregation laws)
Plessy v. Fergeson (separate but equal accomodations for different races are legal--even when they are unequal)
Poll taxes and literacy tests
(Oops--I didn't see the 1890 date--see the last paragraph for more on your question. The following came after that:)
Brown v. Board of Education Topeka KS (separate but equal schools are illegal--integration is needed)
Rosa Parks refuses to give her seat to a white man because he is white.
The civil rights movement.
The Watts and other 1960s riots.
Civil rights reforms from the 1960s.
The rise of black entertainers in popular culture, especially from the the late 1980s to the present.
Rodney King incident
A black man with a real shot at presidential nomination.
Political life for black people really changed little--as slaves they had no power in politics, and after 1965 southern states instituted laws and intimidation to keep african americans out of politics. Socially, emancipation changed everything--no longer would a slave be forced to work, fed/taken care of, or have a set place in society. Some freedmen headed west to seek their fortunes, others combined efforts with other former slaves and became sharecroppers working for themselves. Others continued doing the jobs they did as slaves in exchange for room and board. Emancipation gave black people some opportunity for success, but you didn't see real progress until a century later, because (imo) you can't free slaves, they can only free themselves.
