I'm not entirely sure. But remember, more pixels doesn't always mean better quality. Having a lot of pixels can create something called 'noise' which will actually lessen the quality of your photograph. When i bought my camera, i went for a 8mp model rather than a cheaper 10mp camera because the 8mp produced a better quality photo and had a faster shutter speed. Don't be fooled by the number of pixels :]

The highest is in the 100,000 + range for astronauts to crop out 1% and have detail. The highest under $14,000,000,000 is the Hassleblad 60 mp. There are DSLRs into the 24mp range. 12 megapixels on a tiny camera is bad. Megapixels are the cancer of cameras. They are growing out of control and will soon enough take up so much sensor that the light can't even make a picture, like when cancer take the blood and you kinda just stop living because there's no Oxygen. Too many megapixels all fight for the light till no pixels get any and the computer has to make it up, and the pictures suck. 6-8 is all anybody needs. It makes more detail so that you can crop out or print big. If you see anything on the computer, it is being displayed at 600X700 or less, that's the size of a 1 megapixle camera. The joke is you're spending all this money for more pixels and dealing with 15mb files, to display them at 1 megapixel, 30kb files! God bless America.

If you're in the market for a camera, a whole lot of megapixels shouldn't concern you. Features would be quite important. Do you want a super zoom camera, maybe one with an image stabilizer, or one that has aperture/shutter priority. For most people 4 to 7 mega is sufficient. If you're buying a camera and if you write another question mention how much you are willing to spend.

There are 39 mega pixels from Hasselblad H3D however it has a 36,7 x 49,0 мм sensor size for more than $33000. As for other SLRs, it's more than enough to have 10-12MP. If you are looking for a compact, there are Canon SD950, G9 and A630 with 12.1 MP, but it,s small for this pixels gross sensor 1/1.7 is very noisy. Look at the article: "Canon Powershot G9, SD950 and A650: can 12MP make SLR from compact" -- http://fototramp.blogspot.com/2007/11/canon-powers...
Therefore, if you are in need of a good picture quality from a digital compact, don't look at the highest pixels, look at the sensor size. For more be my guest at: http://fototramp.blogspot.com/2007/11/compare-digi...

As with others , the Hasselband has the most at the moment.
However, the new Canon 1Ds MkIII has a 21mp sensor at a more affordable price (£5995) - I mean affordable in a comparative sort of way, of course.
