Depending on where they originate...and what is the most efficacious route for a particular breed of bird to navigate, since each have their own preferences and their own flying issues...
Yes, some can follow an East to West pattern as they head to warmer climates...and vice versa...what they are seeking is warmer weather...except in the case of some ducks who with some breeds fly from south to north after the breeding season.
The only ones who have ever waved to me were mouthy geese! LOL

The birds fly north to south, they do not wave as they fly by. But they like to do bombing runs in flight using my car as the target of choice.LOL.

They seem to fly in circles where I'm at! I have a nice view of the hawks who appear to have an edless supply if pidgeons to feast upon. Ah, yet another joy of living in California! Not even the birds want to leave this place!

Duh, birds can fly any direction they want to. They usually fly to a warmer spot if they don't like the cold spot, normally that would be to the south in the winter and north in the summer. I saw a saw a hum bird here in southern Cal today.

Here they all meander a lot but basically do north and south. And, yes, they all wave as they go over and frequently stop for an overnight.

They stop at my backyard for some refreshment and then they seem to head north to Farmington Bay. Not only do they wave, but they also leave all kinds of gifts on my car.

Many birds migrate or fly south for the winter because of temperature changes. Cold, snowy winters can create a real health hazard for them, as does the lack of food. So when the days grow shorter and colder, birds set off for their warmer winter home.

They wave good bye in the fall and hello in the spring. I think they go to sunny Florida.
