How to find a 1970s car?

My fiend sold his car and wants to get it back... so we are trying to find a way to track the car with a vin number. Now, This is a 10 digit vin number so you can't use carfax or any other up to date vin number search. Any suggestions or links to sites that I can look up 10 digit vin numbers would be great?

You should contact the Car Clubs in your area that specialize in that type of car. We have a national database for the Club that I am in. If you post the year , make and type of car we may be able to help. Good luck.

That would be a gross violation of privacy, and so I don't think you'll find that you're allowed to do that online. Carfax doesn't do it either.

A state DMV would have the information, but they won't give it to you. Your best best is probably car clubs.

I guess you could go to the DMV and ask them. But you would have to have a good reason for them to search for that number.
