Will changing the password for our wireless network kick people off of it?

Will changing the password for our wireless network kick people off of it? We live in a neighborhood and I'm sure there are like 7 or 8 houses around us that are within range of our wireless router.

Our internet over the past couple days has gotten really slow. I'm afraid maybe someone might have figured out our (unfortunately simple) password. So I'm curious that if I changed the password for our router if it would kick people off our service. I'm worried that even if I change it, they might have our network and password saved and maybe they'd still be able to connect even with a new password... help? thanks!

Update:

thank you to everyone who has answered so far =]

just to let you all know, I don't think we have a bug on all 3 of our desktops and 4 laptops :-p

thank you!

You need to set up some kind of security on your network. If anyone from your neighbourhood scans for a wireless network, yours will show up and they will be able to connect to it.

Go into your router's setup and set up either WEP or WPA protection. You'll need to set this up on your computers on the network so they are permitted to access your router and the internet.

Change your router's admin password too while you're there. And disable Broadcast of SSID from the wireless options.

Well that is quite a big possibility of that happening.

once I was on the suffering side as well.

Changing the password is the best option.

But before you do that, you have an option in the wireless router to see the devices that are connected to the router.

That will give you an idea of how many devices are connected at a given time.

And after changind the password, no computer will be able to connect until they retype in the new password again( not even you.. you need to change the password on your computer as well after you change the password on the router.)

that will help you out and also dont keep any comman passwords.

See earlier answer about changing the WEP/WPA key, but also change the ADMIN password for the router in case he also has that. In fact change that first, and of course dont forget it. You dont even have to turn off the router then. You will have to reset the WEP/WPA passwords on all the PC that you want to be allowed into the router, but thast easy enough, they should ask when they spot that the key has changed.

If you feel that others are using your router, call the people who installed it....but I don't think that is it! I think you have a virus bug, or have you been cleaning up the net after each use, try turning off the PC and rebooting it....my self..I have a different password for every site I go to...but by all means change your password once a week if you feel others have sneaked in....maybe you need an adjustment....but do call the company who sold the router to you and the people who you are connected to...nine times out of ten a bug or ya need to re-boot..gleelogan@yahoo.com

no, it wont cuz all they need to do is run aircrack on linux operating system. And give it about a week and then they will have your password. Its impossiable no mater what the other ppl say here. you can get pass any web incricption password. So the best you can do is lower the range of the router which is hard if your not a techy person. This would make it so ppl have to be closer to you to get ur internet. and its not really doing you harm unless they are going on your files, which is illegal.

Source(s): i learn this right now im attending morris county school of techoology which is a votechional high school. and one of my teachers is teach me this and how to hack it.

OK change this by all means . IT WILL prevent others using your wireless as a portal make sure you do not transmit the new password over your link before the change is effected. you should be able to quiz your router to see who is using it so if any of the machines using it is not known to you they are piggy-backing on your gateway.

Changing the password to the router will not do anything. You need to enable encryption. There are two kinds of encryption WEP and WPA; if your neighbours are hackers they will just hack their way in again if you use WEP. Use WPA and set a WPA key that is long and includes alphanumeric characters that is not a dictionary word.

You need to check your owners manual to see if your router has WEP or WPA encryption; but if your router has lights on it that go on and off when you use the internet, just turn all the computers in your house off. If the router is still busy then your neighbours are using your internet connection

don't worry changing the password would be a big help. this time change a password thats really hard with a mixture of numbers and letters, this way people can't get onto it. people aren't able to save the password without knowing th password. if they saved the old password then it still wouldn't matter because you changed it to a new password. just make sure its a tough password. oh yeah make sure you locked your network to only your household.

I agree with The Chief about switching to WPA..

Be careful of one thing..Your security must be set according to lowest capable Wireless component. Say for example, the most your Wireless system is capable of is WPA2. But one device is only capable to do WEP, then the whole system must be configured to WEP.

Change your password freq and, do use combinations of #@12AShu as a possible example..

    Good Luck~!

If you change your WEP or WPA key it will kick everyone off until they enter that key. You might want to go into the management console of the router first though and see if anyone else is connected before you do that. If there is nobody else connected it may just be that your Internet provider is having problems.
