My parents bought my grandparents the Planet Earth dvd set that she wants. But they are blueray discs...?

I know what blue ray discs are but I was wondering if a Blue Ray Disc will play on a standard DVD player? It says on the DVD case that it is only for a Blue Ray Disc player but I wouldve thought they would make them backwards compatible. Maybe not, idk. Also, with a Blue Ray DVD player, can it be hooked up to a standard tube TV? Or does it need to be plugged into a HD capable TV?

Thanks for any advice/suggestions you give!

You have to have a Blu-Ray player to play the discs, they will not play on a DVD player.

Whether or not you could hook the Blue-Ray player up to a standard TV may depend on the individual player. In order to view them in the full definition, however, there is no question you would need an HDTV.

I do not believe that Blue Rays will work in a regular DVD player. Its the same as trying to shove a DVD into a VCR. I believe blue ray players can be hooked into any tv. Also FYI...i believe the cheapest blueray player is the PlayStation 3. YOu get a blueray player and a sweet gaming system in one. Check it out.

a Blueray disc can only be played on a Blueray player.

and yes, it can be played on a standard tube tv.

though it defeats the purpose of using a Blueray player at all since u wont see any significant difference in the picture quality.

truthfully, the picture quality of a Blueray rocks but it burns too much of a hole in your pocket. i'd rather go with HD-DVD. about the same quality as Blueray.

They won't play on a standard player. They are two different formats and regular DVD players also don't have fast enough processing to play BluRay.
