It would cost you money for software no matter what.
Have you looked into boxing them up and sending them via media mail at the post office?
It is dirt cheap and may be a good alternative for you.

You can try DVD Shrink. Though it is mainly used for making copies of copy protected DVDs, it also serves as a ripping program. And last time I checked, it was free.

Dvdshrink! It usually takes about 30-50 mins per disk(was backing up 'seasons' of my fav. shows..) best luck!
