Paxil detox?

I've taken myself off a 30mg per day doseage of Paxil. Today is the third day without and yesterday I began suffering very powerfull headaches and elevated blood pressure. How long can I expect this to continue until the seritonin levels ballance out again?

Update:

okay, let me add, this was not voluntary. I've lost my medical insurance and short of going to mexico to get the pills I have no access. So, no doctor, no weaning off. I just need to know how long the withdrawl effects might last.

Depends on the individual. Did you do this on your own? Hopefully, not? Did you taper down slowly from the 30 mgs. at least? If not I suggest you do so. Go down 10 mgs. a week, for example. It may allow you to wean yourself off it without such severe side effects. Many people have trouble with severe withdrawal symptoms from Paxil because it has such a short half life. Many patients end up using Prozac to wean themselves off of Paxil. This works better because, unlike Paxil, Prozac leaves your system slowly (has a much longer half-life) and you wont suffer the severe withdrawal symptoms.

Edit: Just read your additional info--That really stinks. Any chance you can explain your circumstances to your former MD and at least get some samples to wean off the meds slowly? Psychiatrists always have free samples they get from their drug co. reps. I'm really sorry about your situation. I've been taking SSRI antidepressants for over ten years and have tried to go off and it's very difficult. I've never experienced withdrawal symptoms, but when i'm off the meds I'm pretty miserable and not someone you'd want to be around. Good luck to you and be careful.

All of the below still applies, but I just read your added info. Discuss this with your doctor and see if he/she can't provide some free samples to use during the weaning process.

Are you doing this under the supervision of your doctor? Doctors advise reducing the dosage gradually to lessen these effects, which can be serious. The good news is that Paxil has a half life of less than 24 hours, meaning that half of it is metabolized out of your body in that time. However, the other half, and the remnants of all the rest of the Paxil you've ever taken, are stored up in your body. There's no way of knowing how long it will take to clear all of them out. Plus, your brain has grown used to having a certain serotonin level and removing the Paxil causes it to have to do a sudden readjustment. There can be some nasty side effects when that happens and they can last for quite some time.

I strongly suggest discussing a weaning process with your doctor rather than stopping Paxil cold turkey.

you should never take yourself off of medication like that, you need a doctor to wean you off of it! These symptoms can last 2 weeks or more and is too dangerous. Your body is going thru withdrawal. You need to gradually wean yourself off the medicaton. Talk to your doctor, he will give you the right plan to get off the medication permanently.
