If you are deemed to be a danger to yourself or others you can be committed against your will to a psychiatric hospital. This is very rare and generally not something you need to worry about unless you go around threatening to kill yourself or other people.
If you are committed against your will, usually you can only be held for 72 hours before a hearing must be held to determine if you can be out on your own.

I believe that a person can be committed to a psychiatric hospital by either the court or a psychiatrist under the grounds that either 1) they are an imminent danger to themselves, or 2) they are an imminent danger to someone else with a significant mental disturbance present. If the person is just out-of-control but isn't in harm's way, than usually, no.
