Food poisoning?

My husband was feeling totally fine like 10 minutes ago and all of a sudden started throwing up out of nowhere. He said he ate a tamale and some leftover 7 layer bean dip from yesterday. The problem was the bean dip was supposed to be thrown away because it sat out all day yesterday at my work's christmas party. Instead, when I brought it home last night, he put it in the fridge thinking it was ok I guess. He didnt know that and he had a little bit of it. Could he have gotten food poisoning? And if so, what do we do? I've never had it before.

Well if he has food poisoning, then most likely he just took care of the problem when he puked it all up. If he continues to feel sick go to the Emergency Department where they can give him fluids, and possibly anti-nausia medicine.

Make sure he can sip water and keep it down. Offer room temperature, not hot or cold. Have him just try very small sips, and continue sipping to replace the fluid he's lost through vomiting. He quite probably does have a form of food poisioning, and the best thing at this point is to let the body handle things. Vomiting is a first line defense to remove the offending gerbies from the stomach. When his stomach is empty, that should stop. He will need to stop eating and not eat again for 24 hours. All he needs to do is drink clear liquids, any clear liquid except alcohol. The next thing which will likely appear is diarrhea and gas- as the system removes the offending gerbies from the gut below the stomach. That also is not an enemy, and you don't need to do anything or take anything for it. In fact, taking medication to stop the diarrhea can make matters a lot worse,by bottling up the gerbies inside you. If you aren't eating, the diarrhea will also stop when he's empty- that usually takes a few hours, depending on how full the system is. If he can hold down liquids today, tomorrow he can have bananas, rice, apples/sauce, white bread and toast. He shouldn't eat anything else, because it will either cause him to vomit or have a bout of diarrhea again. Diarrhea also removes the good bacteria you need for proper digestion, so he should not have any kind of dairy products at all. No milk, no butter, no yogurt, no cheese, nothing. If the third day everything looks good, he can have a bland diet. That means nothing fatty or spiced- and still no dairy or alcohol. By the fourth day if all is still looking good, he can have a regular meal- still no dairy. If he's feeling up to it, he can have a carton of live culture yogurt, whatever flavor he likes best. He should eat the same way the following day, and after that he can be on full feed again. If he's lucky and only had a tiny bit, it's possible the vomiting can remove it all from the system. As long as he doesn't have diarrhea, he should just take it easy on his belly today and not tempt things. Basically it's a wait and see proposition at this point. Make sure he's drinking plenty of clear fluid, and rest. As long as he holds down water, he'll be okay. If he doesn't hold it down, or develops bloody diarrhea then you will need to go see the ER.

so.... you brought home something that you knew had set out all day.... hmmm... you knew that this potentially harmful substance should of been trashed..... but you made it available to consume.... he thinking that it was something good because wife brought it home (but wife knew that it should have been trashed). you know there are many mystery books written on this type of subject, how wife kills mate with food or other stuff. i'm just joking about any willful intent.

just that everybody needs to know that ANYTHING left on the counter and is not used with a certain amount of time (7 layer bean dip made in the traditional way, one hour-one hour thirty minutes at most). keeps in the fridge for about three days, but is really not good after first serve. use it then lose it.

(sorry for the kids in china that don't get enough to eat, but i'm sure the don't want to be poisoned in the process of getting full) . could he have gotten poisoned from this mixture?

well heck yeah! the ingredients to the most simple 7 layer dip is rife with potential food borne hazards. i truly hope that you husband gets better soon , and always remember....

when in doubt, throw it out.

Source(s): been in that situation (by an ex-wife, can you believe?). and have been a chef for eons (or so it seems). if you can't keep it cool enough, or hot enough, toss it.

It does sound like food poisoning. The most common treatment for simple food poisoning is simply supportive care at home with clear liquids to stay hydrated, and after vomiting or diarrhea subside, the gradual return to eating beginning with a bland diet (such as rice, bread, potatoes and milk).

The doctor should be consultedalled if the he has nausea, vomiting or diarrhea that lasts more than 2 days, a fever, dizziness or unconsciousness,

Yes it sounds like food poision. There is the temperature danger zone witch is 41*- 140*F and if anything is to get in that temperature danger zone for more than 4 hours it should be thrown out. If it was left out then that is probably what made him sick. Usually you can just take some antibioitics, but some cases you ned to go to the ER right away , depending on what type of food poision. If it starts to get worse i would go.

The common symptoms of food poisoning are vomiting, abdominal cramping, and diarrhoea. Symptoms usually begin 1 to 24 hours after eating the contaminated food.

    TREATMENT FOR FOOD POISONING INCLUDES:

Doing nothing. Most common types of food poisoning subside within 24 hours without treatment.

Replacing fluids. Extra fluids may be needed because of the vomiting and diarrhoea. Take frequent small sips of water or a re-hydration drink such as Gastrolyte.

Antibiotics may occasionally be prescribed by your doctor for some food poisoning

CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR RIGHT AWAY WHEN THE FOLLOWING OCCURS:

vomiting and diarrhoea that lasts more than a few hours in young children

an infant or child becomes listless, withdrawn, or inactive

nervous symptoms exist such as tingling, weakness, or headache or

a fever is combined with diarrhoea, vomiting, and abdominal pain or cramping

If it seems just like the Flu, it's food poisoning. He will get diarrhea so he needs plenty of fluids. You generally treat it like the flu. If it gets real bad go to ER and they will put him on IV's.

Pepto-Bismol is one of the few stomach aids that works with food poisoning. It's bismuth subsalicylate and encapsulates the poisons where it is passed through your body. Otherwise Pepto-Bismol sucks for most stomach conditions.

If it's really bad he should go to the hospital. Otherwise he will simply vomit and perhaps have diarrhea. When he is done losing fluids, re-hydrate him. You may want to contact poison control to aid in the decision of going to the ER
