The ark was representative of gods kingdom on the earth.
It proved to the nation of isreal that their god Jehovah was the supreme god and could not be defeated as long as they were faithful to him. Many times it is spoken of as the ark of the covenant. This is when the people swore to only worship Jehovah and no one else.Another covenant is alive today with Jesus Christ as Mediator of the new covenant. Revelation 11:19 proves that Jesus is ruling as king of that new covenant.

What i've been taught is that it is a mainly a metaphor (besides containing the tablets with the 10 commandments on them). The metaphor: Jesus died for everyone and after he did that, when God looks at us with judgement, he sees his son. Jesus covers us and protects us from that judgement because on our own we don't measure up, but he does. The ark of the covenant seperated the people from the Law (judgement) and when they are exposed to the Law, the consequence is death because we all fall short of measuring up to what the Law demands.

The original purpose of the ark of the covenant was to store the commandments that God Himself wrote on tables of stone, and gave to Moses to tell the Israelites. The ark also serves as a metaphor for the human heart, where we allow God to write upon it His law of love, which is to love the LORD our God and to love others (and our selves) as we love Him.

the ark of the covenant was a box (sort of, a container, ornate) in which the ten commandments were carried, and stored, in the tabernacle, before the construction of the Temple.
