In Matthew 2:9-10, the star still leads the wise men to Bethlehem to see the CHILD Jesus. The wise men don't return to Herod to report back on the whereabouts of Jesus because of a dream that God had given them. The star was just a star and, to some, a meaningful compass for men of faith to seek Jesus. Giving it your own twist and interpretation makes the birth of Jesus pointless.
