My computer will read some music cds but not others....?

When I put a music cd in the cd player, sometimes it immediately starts up, and other times it doesn't. I received two music cds for Christmas. One is detected, the other is not. Both are store bought music cds. What's the difference, and how can I fix this? My system doesn't even recognize that there is a cd in the drive when I go through my computer.

Update:

I didn't try them in a cd player, but I loaded the cd that my HP system won't pick up on my dell, and it read it just fine. I was able to copy the music to the hard drive and play it as well as being able to play it from the cd drive. I just can't get it to work on the HP system. It has happened with other cds also.

Did you try both disks in a normal CD player? sounds like you have received 1 faulty disk for xmas.

Added : Maybe you should invest in a CD Drive cleaner kit and try cleaning the drive on the HP before you do anything else. there is no logical reason why it would play one but not another other than having a dirty laser head or a faulty disk

    Good luck
