What is the puss coming out of my dog's penis?

I noticed months ago a small amount of a thick yellow substance on the tip of my 11 year-old dog's penis. My husband wouldn't let me take him to the vet for it. He said "that's just dried urine". I disagreed but waited to see if it would get worse and it didn't. However, a few minutes ago, I noticed he had it again and it was on his leg. It was also on his penis again, so I wiped it off and noticed it had a foul smell. He keeps licking at it and the other dogs keep sniffing it. He also seems to have lost his appetite. It's just after Christmas, and we don't have much money. And my husband doesn't like to spend much money on our pets. I don't want to hear "take him to the vet", because I intend on taking him to the vet just as soon as I get paid tomorrow. Until then, I'll worry myself to death unless I have some kind of idea of what could be wrong and how the vet will fix it. He is so old, I figured he'd have health problems sooner or later. Does anyone have any idea what it might be?

Update:

He is 11 years old and was castrated at 6 months. How could it be semen? Also, I'm a grown, married woman. I think I know what semen looks like. However, it could be smegma, but why is there SO much coming out at one time? If I call a vet, he'll probably have me bring him in because he'll want my $$. I guess I shouldn't worry though.

Update 2:

I feel so stupid for spelling pus incorrectly (I spelled it with two "s"s). I'm so ashamed. I know no one cares, but I had to clear up the fact that I'm not a complete fool.

Update 3:

I have plenty of respect for vets. You should have more respect for peoples' opinions. You don't know how it is here in WV. It doesn't matter what is wrong with a pet. The vet ALWAYS tells me to bring them in. I'm no fool. I know it's because they want me to pay for the visit, because often times that's all I have to pay for because nothing is wrong. If they were willing to just talk to me on the phone about the problem once in a while, I'd be very grateful, but so far that has never happened. Respect yourself. And the next time you go to answer someone's question, just try answering the question.

Update 4:

Something is definitely wrong. It smells horrible, and he keeps secreting it. It is thick and white. I have been reading about Balanoposthitis. It sounds like it could be an infection. I'm definitely taking him to a vet in the morning. Thanks for all your help.

It could be dried urine or a yellow-green mucous-like discharge (called smegma) since it is just in small amounts. If it was pus with more of a consistency of cheese spread (gross, I know, but closest to the description) and VERY smelly then it could be a penile infection. Based upon the info you gave us, it would appear that it probably is a normal discharge.

I have small male Chihuahuas (indoors) as well as a large Redbone Hound (outdoors) and they all get a small amount of discharge at the opening of their penis sheath or prepuce. I have not been concerned since it has occurred across the board with all of my male dogs even my 15 yr old guy and they urinate fine.

The vet will check your boy out and make sure that there aren't any infections or problems. Feel free to ask questions and get a better understanding of the different discharges so that you will know what to look for should it occur in your pet. Most vets have photos that can give you a visual of different discharges.

Hope he will be declared healthy and fit so that your worry will be put to rest.

    Good luck.

This sounds like smegma. It's normally produced in the prepuital sheath of the penis. Irritation could cause the the amount of secretion to be increased. I would try using a sterile saline solution to wash the area just in case there is some debris in there. I wouldn't try hydrogen peroxide only because it is drying, and this is a mucous membrane we're dealing with. We want to keep this moist. Sterile saline is nice an neutral, and will flush debris. I wouldn't worry too much. If this continues, especially if it's foul smelling, you may want to check with your vet. A simple antibiotic regimen will probably clear it up, and for the most part, it's cheap. Good luck, and don't feel bad for being concerned I used to wonder what that stuff was as well.

It is actually called smegma. It is totally normal, all male dogs have it on there penis from time to time (humans have it as well). At all ages and yes even if they are neutered. All it is, is a mixture of bodily fluids secreted from the genitalia, normally dogs just clean themselves and no one notices it, but some dogs ( I noticed when my dogs get older ) are not as efficient anymore. Don't worry your dog is going to be OK.

I'm pretty sure it's just semen or discharge. You're dog is probably fine. But it is a serious concern for you- take it to the vet and have it checked out.
