I turn my laptop on and it seems to load in the begining but before it gets to the windows screen a blinking underscore appears in the top left hand corner of the screen and it just stays like that and wont load any further. Can someone help me fix this problem.

I am guessing that you are trying to boot into Windoze?
Try SAFE mode.
Press the F5 key as the computer boots. Let us know if that works....

How long have you waited?
There is a condition that can cause this to happen and you need to let it load up first to correct the problem.
I've seen this happen before with CD\DVD drives error to many times and put the drives into PIO mode thus causing everything to slow down dramatically and it can take up to 5 minute for the computer to finally boot into windows if this is the problem.
Once the computer boots into windows(and remember that everything is going to be slower than a snail), click on start, click on control panel double click the System Icon once that opens click on the hardware tab then click on the device manager button, once device manager opens up click on the plus next to ide ata/atapi controllers, once you do that you will see at least 3 items, the master controller and primary and secondary controller. You can verify if either the primary or the secondary controller is in PIO mode by double clicking on each one separately and looking at the advanced setting if there is PIO Mode in either of the transfer mode boxes then it has to be fixed but if they are both in DMA mode then that isn't the problem and we need to look elsewhere.
The fix is a simple one, if either are in PIO mode then close off the window for the Primary or secondary controller you are looking at and get back to the window that shows the list of controllers, and remove the master controller which is normally above the primary and secondary controller then reboot once you reboot your system will find the new hardware and set it back to DMA mode then things will be back to normal

You can also try to hit F8 which will allow you to see the BIOS settings and you can attempt to restore them to the default and see what happens. Also hit F2 during startup and see if you can figure out how to check the boot sequence and double check to make sure the hard drive is still listed as one of the devices.
