Help!! My 3 wk and 2 day old is constipated..?

My son is having trouble going #2. I have to help him along with a rectal thermometer and give him a tsp of karo syrup in his bottles. He is on a special formula called Nutramigen (about 10 days now). He is cranky and always seems to be trying to push. Also, since he is now on this formula, he tends to spit up a bit. Not too much, though. I wish there was more I could do for him, he just seems so uncomfortable. I've been to the doc twice and she changed the formula. I don't want to call her for every little problem. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. How many times a day should baby be going and is it too soon for a tsp of oatmeal is his bottle? Thanks

Update:

Thanks to everyone for the advice. For the others that are being so critical. Just an FYI..I have gone to my doctor twice already. She is the one who told me to use the rectal thermometer and karo syrup. I know that I'm not a doctor and do not have medical degree and I would never do anything without the permission of my doctor. I was just trying to get advice from other experienced mothers out there. So please stop being so rudel and go take your frustrations out on someone who deserves it. Again, thanks to all the other mothers that have given me some helpful tips.

Update 2:

Also, I never said I gave him oatmeal, yet. I thought he was too young, but everyone has different opinions about that. Just asking a question. That what this is here for, right?

Don't ask us! Call your doctor, that is what they are there for. Situations like these could have simple fixes (not from people on Yahoo Answers) or can mean there is a serious problem. Call your Peds tomorrow and get an appointment. You will be spending at least one day a week in their office with different newborn problems and concerns. They may change the formula or add something else to their diet. Don't use a rectal to get him to poop or give him anything else. Do not do anything except take them to the doctor tomorrow. You did not go to med school so you should not be making up these crazy fixes for such a young baby.

Wow! This is such a good example of the different types of people in the world...just reading these answers is quite an educational experience...

There are these truly concerned helpful women, looking to comfort and give good advice and they actually have tact....

Then there's the ones that are still helpful, but not looking to comfort...still ok. Helpful is good...

Then there's the women who think they know everything and their way is the only way...but aren't too rude about it...

And then we find ourselves faced with the high and mighty attitudes of women with all the answers. Women who MUST have had a bad day (for atleast the last year or so). If you were paying attention, rather than judging uncontrollably, you'd notice that this mother already told you that she has been calling her doctor...and then you contradicted yourself by ragging on the methods that she's using...well, the "precious doctor" is the one who advised her to use those methods. If you're so perfect, feel free to preach in a church...not to mothers looking for advice.

And how about this other lovely women who says "how did I know this child was bottle fed" or some other ignorant comment. How far beyond rude can you really go? You have no idea why this mother isn't breast feeding. And who are you to judge anyway...it doesn't work for everyone, some people are not comfortable with it, some people are working. It appears that most mothers DON'T breast feed...I may be wrong...but that's how it seems.

So, I would think that you'd want to help if you're on here, right? So, what kind of mother are you if you think blunt, rude criticism is the way to help.

Go ahead and call the doctor anytime!!! seriously, for every little thing. It's ok! and if your doctor makes you feel that it's not ok, switch doctors :)

I would reccomend against giving any baby that young any type of food, not until at least 6 months. it can really mess yp their stomach and intestines making everything so much worse.Try giving baby a two ounce serving of fresh goats milk here and there...it's the closest milk to human milk and easier on the digestive tract. You can also just give the baby goats milk, but you will need to add folic acid supplement in it, ask your doctor about goats milk.

    or

    you can always start breastfeeding...

all you need to do is lay in bed for a couple of days without a bottle and throw away any passifiers that you have...then lay with baby and bring him to the nipple any time he cries or anytime you can. make sure to have a couple of movies there to watch and magazines or a book to keep you busy... drink a dark oatmeal stout beer or a guenness yourself to get your milk supply back and you can even buy a mothers milk tea from the grocery store. ... restarting breastfeeding is tough but is SO WORTH IT. you will see an immediate change in your baby and he will be getting the best nutrition possible.

Also, some babies go poop every day and some go once a week... if it takes longer than a week or looks like turds instead of pasty or liquidy then call the doc.

but yeah, always call the doc any time you want.

Your baby is only 3 weeks old!!!!! Please don't give him anything other than formula. Karo syrup is sugar and is certainly not good for a baby to eat.

And DO NOT GIVE HIM OATMEAL!!! He shouldn't have any food other than formula until he is 6 months old. His digestive system is not developed enough to cope with oatmeal or any other food.

Nutramigen is a special formula for babies with food allergies who are unable to tolerate other forms of formula. If that is the case with your son, giving him other foods would probably make it worse. Stick to the formula only and give his system a chance to settle down. It may take several weeks, but if you keep giving him other things (including Karo syrup), it will take longer.

If you are concerned, don't be afraid to see your doctor as often as you need to.

Many doctors are against using Karo syrup for contstipation. As with honey, it can cause botulism in infants. Stop changing the formula so often. It can take up to two weeks for a baby to get used to a new one.

If he is in horrble pain and screaming all the time (was just there last week) then buy a pediatric supository. I tried everything else and that was the only thing that worked. The pharmacist told me to only use half.

On a side note, b4 I gave the suppository, my doctor had me try dark Karo syrup in the bottle (he said lite would not work) and 1oz of juice to 1oz of water. Don't let others upset you by telling you you were wrong to do that.

i would say it is to early for oatmeal in his bottle since he's only 3 weeks old, his digestive system isn't ready to handle oatmeal yet, and you always want to start with rice first since its basically a lighter form of oatmeal, but i would wait until he's at least 12 weeks.... you can add a little bit of apple, pear, or prune juice to his formula (i would only start with about half an oz to see what works, and work your way up by the half so he doesn't get to much of the juice.) also don't save any uneaten bottles if you mixed juice in because they spoil a lot quicker than just normal formula. all doctors i have talked to said it is perfectly okay to do this, but if you want you could still consult your doctor before doing so. to stop the spitting up try sitting him up in a sitting position for as long as possible after he eats, babies have an open valve in their bellies that closes once they're so old, but by sitting them up your pretty much manually closing it causing them not to spit up as bad, if its just a little bit of dribble spit up thats perfectly normal and even sitting them up probably won't help, but it will help if its projectile.

They can go several times a day to even just once a week. Lack of BMs is not constipation. That would just be the inability to go. He may be uncomfortable for many reasons.
