Concerns about visiting a naturalist community...?

I have been invited to go along with a good friend to a local nudist colony. He used to participate in nudism often until it became harder to maintain in his evolving life. I have always been interested in naturalism and wish to practice it myself, but I have two major concerns, although one might be a little silly.

Like 80% of Americans I was raised with puritan ideas concerning nudity, being that it is sexual, and the body is something to be covered up. In identifying my own individuality, I find myself opposed entirely to such body taboos, but I've never (until now) been given the opportunity to attempt ridding myself of the physical habits that come with the modest mindset (at least, in such a vastly social setting). I'm concerned that it will be difficult for me relax and that I will, out of habit, exhibit inappropriate thoughts.

My other concern is where I will keep (or how I will occupy) my hands. I'm just so used to pockets, I simply feel lost without them.

Bring a book, a water bottle, a radio, etc. along with you to carry and keep your hands occupied. Most nudist restorts require a towel to be carried around with you as well, to place on seats before you sit down.

Being shy is pretty normal. Even people practicing nudism at home for years can be uncomfortable the first time they're in a larger social setting. You'll find in most restorts, people are in various stages of undress. Some are only topless, some in light clothing or robes, some completely nude. You wouldn't likely stand out if you to do the same until you felt more comfortable. As far as inappropriate thoughts - for most this goes away after only a few hours. At first it feels so strange and different, but once you're there a while, it feels like you're just talking to people on an ordinary vacation. You stop noticing the nudity altogether. And that's really the point of nudist resorts: the opportunity to become completely comfortable in a natural state.

    First, it's NATURIST. Not Naturalist.

Second, there's no such thing as a nudist colony. Clubs and resorts yes. Ants live in colonies.

If this is a lifestyle you wish to be involved in, I suggest you learn more about it before you offend someone.

You can occupy your hands by carrying your towel (which you will always use to sit on), reading a book, etc.

Source(s): Naturist most of my life.
