Should the word "crotch" be used when describing an impending love scene?

This book is not a comedy nor a per se romance and would probably fit the genre "chick lit".

The protagonist is a pretty female who recurrently meets up with the male protagonist. In one scene, they are about to get hot and heavy and the heroine, in the first person narrative, refers to her nether region as "crotch".

The author seems to think that the word "crotch" is perfectly fine in this context. However, I think that the word has a sort of derogatory or vulgar connotation better suited for raunchy humor or a fight scene. I wouldn't think that the main character, who happens to write for a living, would refer to her own anatomy as "crotch" during a non-humorous sex scene.

What do you think?

Use of the word crotch would certainly kill the mood for me!

It does have a vulgar connotation and is unromantic in the extreme. It is pragmatic and mundane, if not downright crude.

No lady would refer to herself that way except perhaps in talking about the fit of a pair of trousers.

    I am a writer. I write romance.

No. Even if the novel isn't a romance, the scene is romantic ... and "crotch" would just ruin the mood for the reader.

I agree with you. It´s kind of vulgar and raunchy.

Like there´s something unhealthy going on...one uses that word for...well, diseases, etc. Not romance or love scenes.

    Guys have a "crotch".

I cannot see a romantic scene like that.

"Persephone was on the couch when she felt a tingling sensation in her crotch. That 'desire' was starting to build, like a slow, creeping fire, making her crotch feel sweaty."

    Doesn't really work

Well, if there's such a thing as redneck chick lit, you might be able to get away with it. Otherwise, it's a bit indelicate for a love scene.

    It ruins the moment, no.
