How long can escargot be refrigerated?

I bought 18 escargots at the grocery store about a week ago and put the package in the refrigerator. The escargots were packaged in a see through "basket" kind of package where you can see the product. It was completely wrapped but I do not think "hermetically sealed." We were going to cook them tonight and my spouse noticed the package says "keep frozen." The escargots were not in the frozen food section when I bought them although they were in a "cold case" kind of display (i.e., refrigerated but no glass doors to keep frozen.) They've been in the refrigerator in my kitchen ever since I brought them home.

So, the question is, in a week's time have they spoiled or can we safely cook them? Did the grocery store improperly put them in the wrong case? Thoughts about all of this? Safety issues?

Thank you all!

Margot

Thanks Mr. Lucky. Glad I could bring a smile to your face. You brought one to mine.

Good question! Most meat type items do not last more than a week in the fridge. I don't know if escargot can be classified as a meat or not, but it would be in my book. I wouldn't chance it if I were you. They might make you sick (or not). It surprises me that the store would ignore the label if it said to keep it frozen. Maybe you should let them know about their error. Good luck to you.

I wouldn't eat them, but your nose'll tell.

    I always buy them canned.
